Anyone in particular who, in a historical context, fascinates you more than most?

A hell of a lot of scope here, but i thought it might make for an interesting topic.

I have a bit of a thing for Saint Augustine myself. Like many of the most interesting characters, he was a bit of a cunt - but i find his life, his works and his legacy absolutely engrossing. His Confessions is particularly satisfying - sinner turned saint, anguishing in the guilt of his ways and licking some SERIOUS divine arse. Like with most of his theological works his self-indulgent shaping of Christian doctrine is largely contemptible but as a man with fear guiding his hand towards God, this is hardly surprising. I'd love him to see the world as it is today, and find out what he has to say.

Cleopatra for me as well :o

I watched a special on her a few weeks ago that was really good. She was REALLY ballsy to be that politically minded back in the day AND still pull off being a 'loose' woman.

I was thinking of her actually. I did like the Simon Schama episode about her, but to be honest I've never actively studied her, wheras i've read loads of books about Eva Peron.

To be fair, it's not Guevara in the film. Just a plain old Che.

I always bore everyone that comes to visit me ever when we go over the bridge on King Richards road about the battle and it being his final resting place etc etc.

Mine would be Anne Boleyn. I don't know why. But she was amazing and gave birth to the best Queen this country has ever seen.

Cromwell. He was so far ahead of his times. He was a gifted general, an anti-communist (he smashed the Levellers. I wish someone would do the same to the band) and was a real proto-fascist and rabid anti-catholic. Aside from Richard III, you won't get any better from a domestic leader...

I'd say Elizabeth I is a bit of an inspiration but everybody seems to love her anyway so I'd better start looking for someone else.
