For some reason the extremely positive Guardian review put me off - I think it was the talk of it being a tad gory - but I saw the trailer last week and it looks beautiful, weird and thrilling so I think that’s a NOW PLEASE
 
Ooh, an arthouse lounge! I'll get myself comfy. I had a somewhat wonderful and wacky evening with Polanski's "Repulsion" last week which I'd somehow never seen. Deneuve was superbly dumb and blank throughout and you could see the hate for Polanski etched on her face as it got more and more out there :D

I think my favourite of the "apartment trilogy" is going to be The Tenant overall though.

Tonight's going to be a rewatch of "Loev", a gorgeous Indian film which made me WEEP the first time I saw it. General opinion is "mixed" though - I think the heathens at IMDB have got it lurking around a 5 or so. Oh for the days of their forums being there, I could go and let rip at them there :zombie:

Yes, I read that and there's no information other than that fact that I could find. So sad, he is terrific in it too. Shiv Pandit and Siddharth Menon (who both seem to have gone on to do a fair few other things) were excellent too.

Laura Dern was obviously amazing and immensely :D
How such a nightmare of a woman managed to write such amazing and beautiful books is the REAL MYSTERY here.

I must watch that documentary now. Maybe i’ll warm to Laura Albert, as i saw this film was written by THE OTHER ONE so it might have magnified the monstrous traits in order to ABSOLVE BLAME.
 
I made Mrs Bev re-watch La Vie en Rose with me on Saturday night. It was his first time. Marion Cotillard's performance is even more electrifying than I remembered it from a decade ago, but the Mrs was right when he pointed out that the film isn't all that great; it's the bare bones of her life with very little pause for impact.

I'll make a return when I've watched something worthy. sadly my local arthouse institute doesn't have a very exciting programme for May and June...

still interested in watching that German warehouse romance movie @Zu-Klara promoted though. what was the title again?
 
hello fellow snobs. saw this lovely German film last night, Werk ohne Autor, or in sentimental English, Never Look Away. actually a pretty banal melodramatic plot loosely based on Gerhard Richter's life and art but done with European finesse and of course lots of GERMAN which is never a bad thing :germany: bonus point for having Klaus Nomi on the soundtrack :disco:

I saw ‘Nobody Knows’ the other day, which has left yet another terrible Kore-eda shaped scorch mark. Am I right in saying that the mother being referred to as YOU in the final credits was intended to suggest that the audience is the mother, or is that just the name of the actress?
 
Ooh I have “Nobody Knows” ready to GO but I’m obviously waiting until I’m at my lowest ebb so it can really destroy me :)

I really want to watch “Maborosi” but it seems impossible to get hold of unless i want to pay £50 for a D V D.

So what are we making of the news emerging from Cannes?

Do we think Terry Malick has actually finally made a decent film again?

I’m disappointed by the lack of apparent BOOING this year. :(
 
I'm not sure I've ever seen a Terry Malick movie

but I know I am ready to seethe at the wrongs of the world watching Ken Loach's new one
 
Does anybody still buy DVDs? Getting some fancy arthouse ones cheaply is proving IMPOSSIBLE. I have this Chinese director whose back-cat I want to check out.

Also, can we maybe do a list of our most fave arthouses from recent years?
 
Everyone in Cannes is losing their minds over Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Also heard good stuff about Bacurau.

I was going to say that I hope that MADAME isn’t upset by this review but she’s much more likely to have ignored it. I expect she’s currently luxuriating in her five star hotel room reading Lacan in her Chloé leisure suit or whatever it is in French :disco:
 
If she has read it i hope she remembers it the next time The Guardian come crawling for an INTERVIEW.

Shoplifters and Nobody Knows 10/10. I recently watched UBER arthouse Madeline's Madeline which I half loathed, half loved.

Has anyone seen Capernaum? 13/10
 
Watched Shadow by Zhang Yimou today, it looks amazing and they fight with umbrellas :disco:
 
I’ve just seen ‘XY Chelsea’ and cried at least twice, which I wasn’t expecting at all. I fear for her terribly. It’s just not going to end well, is it? :(
 
In fact I think it might end quite soon :(

A like from the delightful @jivafox has reminded me of that feel-good Hungarian romcom ‘The Turin Horse’ and I thought we might like to share our favourite moments in our exclusive lounge. Personally I’m still ALL about the tasty-looking potatoes and of course the happy ending was a real treat. Just couldn’t stop laughing! So pleased for them! :disco:



God it was so fucking harrowing and I’ve seen ‘Son of Saul’. At least with that one it was kind of inevitable that it might not end especially well. Mind you, we are talking TARR here :side-eye:

I can’t say that I’m fancying ‘High Life’ at all. That excruciating moment in the trailer when he says YOU’RE FOXY AND YOU KNOW IT to Juliette Binoche made me feel sick and put me right off
 
God The Turin Horse sounds FAB. Although really one ought to branch out from films that are too close to one's own life I always think.
