The Netherlands 2019: Duncan Laurence - Arcade

The UK was apologetically shoved onto Spotify last week in its original form, so I don't anticipate major changes.

I can't imagine what they could do with the staging beyond the obligatory golden shower for the final chorus, but we'll see.

Doesn't need much apart from two months to try to get him seeming relaxed and vaguely natural on stage - his gestures were so forced and robotic last time (understandable for someone new to the spotlight like that). This song doesn't need extensive choreo, but the fact that his each performance was identical to the original shows that it wasn't flowing.

Anyway, maybe this should be in his thread, not Duncan's...

This is so utterly fine and all, but I can't see it winning, as much as I'd love to see the Netherlands. It's been what 40 years?

I still think this has s very good shot at winning

And I’d totally be up for Eurovison in Amsterdam :weed:

I briefly liked this but the “losing game’ bit annoys me, I don’t like his face and also it’s ever so slightly Coldplay (:zombie:) so that’s a NO

Oh but the TEETH! Looks like your standard psychopath who blames everyone else for his emotional upsets and people rightly running a mile when he turns the freak on

Obviously I think you’re a lovely person really if you’re reading this Duncan darling

So y'all shouted at me when I kept asking for a live perf, well sorry but I don't see this winning now. It was missing something.

How are the odds doing now everyone has seen it?

I think this definitely isn’t winning now. He looks sinister and children will cry and hide behind the furniture as soon as he appears, only to suddenly start parading around nude when Iceland turn up :disco:

I love how @Zu-Klara hates pretty much EVERYONE :D

:D Oh it’s very much a one horse race for me this year and I know which pony I’M RIDING :disco:

In some ways it’s a bit disappointing that no-one else has captured my diseased imagination, even if there’s more than enough to be getting on with thanks to YOU KNOW WHO. I did like Slovenia but they seem as sour as fuck and obviously think they’re above it despite their pathetic neediness and cow eyes, and the Cyprus staging just seems CHEAP so there’s the remainder of my top three straight in the bin

His odds shortening surprises me a little.

Maybe it’s down to people just putting bets on the favourite? It I just didn’t feel like runaway winner to me when watching the performance

It's still on track for a queen's ransom in the jury vote but it definitely feels much narrower in its potential appeal compared to Too Late For Love tonight. I'd be a bit surprised if it actually came top five in the televote.

He currently has a boyfriend too, so he’s not one of those ”well of course I’d never say never but...” celebrity ’Bi’s.

So he's probably a "damage limitation" gay, like Tom Daley then? :D

So are we resigned to this winning or what

I have to say it has grown on me since the semi. I don't want it to win, but I wouldn't be too pissed off, either. And I would be pleased for The Netherlands, even if they deserved it more five years ago.

Everything Lolly said really. Mostly a Dutch Eurovision winner would be good due to history and geography.

Follow-up single

Decent enough. Probably won't do much outside the Netherlands of course.

I really like it and I think it will do well here. I don’t think Arcade was very successful either unfortunately.

The Dutch victory shows that any country can win with a long term plan.

I see Love Don't Hate It debuted at #76 in the Dutch singles chart. :bruised:

I don't think he ever did strike anyone as someone with a lasting career. He's a bit of a personality vaccum. Yet again, the runner-up seems the one to have a proper career.

A runner up who has just won an EMA, and been congratulated by Ricky Martin :)

Is being a personality vacuum a barrier to success in the charts of 2019? :D

I was surprised Arcade didn't get a bit more traction after it won, given how Spotify-friendly it is. The likes of Toy and Amar Pelos Dois were never going to do anything.

It’s a shame for Duncan, he seems like a thoroughly nice chap, but I must admit I listened to Love Don’t Hate It all of twice and have no inclination to go back to it.

Mahmood:
- Sold our European tour
- Biggest selling Italian language song of all time
- Burberry campaign
- EMA award, and Barrio now gold in Italy.

Duncan:
- Follow up charts at number 76 in The Netherlands :D

I know it’s cruel to compare, but it is quite funny seeing Mahmood seemingly reach a new career peak every single week :D

It just makes it even more frustrating that Soldi also did nothing in the UK. Though clearly his profile was raised enough that he can gig here comfortably. I fear Duncan would struggle to headline a midweek acoustic set at the Two Brewers. :(
