Madonna autographed items

Does anyone have any items autographed by Madonna? I was going to treat myself to this item, but I'm just not convinced by it. It's signed twice for starters. The top one doesn't look like her signature at all, and the bottom signature includes XOXOXO which I've never seen on any other Madonna autograph of hers. What do y'all think?

I find the whole world of autographed items very murky. The only items I own were either bought signed through official artist websites or signed in front of me.

Being a member of a few ABBA Facebook groups, people often post links to ebay items or sales through those groups. A lot of the autographs are clearly fakes, but then there's a whole other world of ones that could be authentic, but how do you actually KNOW? They often come with some sort of certificate or guarantee, but how does that actually PROVE anything?

Yeah, it’s all so, so dodgy. A certificate of authenticity seems to satisfy most collectors, so I suppose you’re covered in terms of “resellability”, but it’s impossible to know if they’re truly genuine signatures. A glance at eBay just now shows literally hundreds of really dubious items being sold.

I would tread very carefully here. Even when it comes to the 'genuine' autographed items - many of those are signed by her assistants (Caresse in particular (RIP) did tonnes of the stuff.)

I'd suggest you visit the Madonna Infinity collector forum - there is a very good informative thread on autographed items there and authentication.

Thanks! And yep, it looks really off. The hunt goes on!

I don’t understand buying second hand signed things, the whole proof used to be that you were there when she was doing it!

Depends. Sometimes artists will just sign a selection of photos / records etc. 'generically' so it's not really meant to be personalised (e.g. sent out to fanclub members, competition winers etc.).

This trend is actually coming back now with lots of 'signed' bundles of albums - I bought the Kylie Minogue and Tori Amos ones in recent years, and I think Gaga's doing it for Chromatica as well.

Personalised signed items (e.g. a signed copy of the Music from To Diddy , Madonna X) are a different story and I would think these are actually less valuable in the long term.

I mean this is something I’ve never really been a part of, apart from my signed photo of Jet from gladiators.

For me, the only value I can imagine is sentimental from a personalised signed item.

I couldn’t trust a generic signed item, I’d just think it could be faked

No, I don't really GET it, unless it has been done in front of you, or is a memento of some experience. The fact that someone I like has scribbled on a photo which was in a pile of 1000 or so doesn't really excite me. In theory, at least - because in the case of album pre-orders and the like, I've paid the extra fiver or tenner or whatever it has been for signed Alison Moyet or Shakespear's Sister albums in the last few years. I don’t think I’ve ever gone over a tenner, though. And all those signed photos are just stuck in envelopes in various places all over the house, attic or garage, so I've no idea why I still do it.

I think with an artist like Madonna, it's a bit different. She doesn't do instore signings, she rarely stops to give autographs, she doesn't sell signed albums on her webstore etc. She's an icon for decades. I'd love a signed LP or signed magazine cover...but I'd HAVE to be sure that she actually signed it.

The only in-store signings I remember are when she did them for Music and American Life... There might have been some others in the '80s but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

She does occasionally stop to sign fan autographs but very rarely and she doesn't do meet & greets or any of that sort of thing.

I did come very close to having an album signed by her when I went to the I'm Going to Tell you a Secret premiere but it didn't happen. :(

I agree entirely. I've lost count of how many times I have Bananarama's signatures- but I think it also adds to the collectability of such items, which is why I go for them.

I've even got Kylie's TWICE, but once was actually from meeting her ( :disco: ) and the other was from my friend who works at Magic FM and so I know is real.

I've only owned two signed CDs in my life, Emma Bunton's first album and Kym Marsh's only album. The latter only because I happened to be browsing in Virgin Megastore (RIP) at the time and the queue was so short that I felt sorry for her.

I did go to a load of Swedish artist signings too back in the day, but mostly for little paper singles that I didn't keep. They were just worth it for the odd experiences attached to them though - such as Linda Bengtzing elbowing me in the ribs really hard and hissing at me to smile during a photo op and Malena Ernman greeting me with the warmth of an old friend because she was convinced I was somebody she knew (in which case, I'm not sure why she thought I'd queue up to get something signed by her in a shopping mall, but whatever :D)

Artists are frequently offering limited signed vinyl, or a signed print with vinyl purchase for the same price as one without - so I always go for the signed version because WHY NOT!

Almost every recent popstar book (Pet Shop Boys, Nick Cave, Tori Amos) has had a signed version too, which always sell out - again WHY NOT if I'm going to buy it anyway.

I'd feel fairly confident both pre-orders of books and vinyl are actually signed by the artist (although I'm not really THAT BOTHERED either way).

Oh if you're ordering something which is autographed anyway, why on earth not, as you say.

I guess it's more the case of autograph hunting for its own sake which holds no appeal to me.

That said, if I could get something autographed by all four of ABBA at a decent price (and satisfy myself of its authenticity), I'd get it for Mr L. As much as he has all of them individually (either signed in front of him or as signed CDs or prints through record companies), having a signed by all album cover would feel special for him, I know.

I don’t have a Kylie autograph and have no desire to scour ebay for one, but if she was offering signed CDs through a website for the same price or a little more, I'd certainly order it.

This is everything! You charitable soul!
