Another black man has been shot dead at a Wendy's drive-thru in Atlanta. Apparently the guy was drunk and asleep at his car but TWO policemen (!) were unable to de-escalate the situation and it ended up with him grabbing a taser and running away, so they shot him dead. There are several videos around but I can't bear to watch them.

I think he tasered the cop too when things got heated. But I can't quite figure out why they instigated a confrontation with him. What was he allegedly doing wrong?

He was asleep in the drive-thru... I mean how that ends up in being shot I do not know.

He did operate the car before sleeping in it so it was a clear DUI. I saw the footage and he was clearly drunk, but friendly. It was when he resisted and ran away (due to being intoxicated). Still, they had his details, car and registration so even if he got away they could just track him down and arrest him later. I don't get the level of force they think is warranted with these situations.

It's not even just that. The police have an ARRAY of tools at their disposal to apprehend someone. You can't tell me that they only had ONE taser between them and the only choice they had left against A DRUNKARD was to shoot him.

I don't think you can ask for an easier arrest than a drunk person. He's basically already pre-tasered.

Policing in the US is out of control and has been for decades. The response to many of the systemic and institutionalised problems seems to have been militarisation.

I mean WHO HASN'T?

He annoys me because First Of The Gang To Die is legitimately one of my favourite songs ever and I feel guilty for endorsing him by listening to it.

Oh, I was a pre-teen Smiths fan. Tell me about it.

Anyway...back to the subject #defundthepolice

Like they didn't even disrespect her or anything, they were blatantly just fucking BUSY! And obviously someone who'd have a meltdown over not getting their McMuffin in a timely manner is just the type you want roaming the streets with a state-sanctioned firearm :eyes:

Look at these 2 bozos

Things look quite awful in the states with what’s happening in Portland and all the videos of police still beating people.

Judge reinstates third-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin in death of George Floyd

"UPDATE (8:37 a.m.): Judge Peter Cahill reinstates the third-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin, marking a significant victory for the prosecution.
According to experts, the third-degree murder charge could make it easier to get Chauvin convicted.". If the choice is he walks or he does time, I'm going to choose he does time. He could also still carry the manslaughter charge in addition to the 3rd degree murder and spend more time in. The prosecution was fighting for this based on a recent appellate court decision in a different case.

Surprised there hasn’t been any discussion on the Daunte Wright killing in Minnesota. The police officer, Kim Potter, confused her gun for a taser and was recorded saying “oh shit I shot him”. This was all because he had an arrest warrant related to a marijuana offense :manson:

the officer and police chief have resigned.

I don't mean on here, since I don't know how much this has made international news, but I feel that I have seen less anger on social media than there would be if Trump was still president.

It’s all I’ve seen on social media. I’m more interested in what the criminal consequences are for this officer and the department.

Well the fact that the police are using tear gas on protestors again and that they haven't even accepted the officer's resignation doesn't make me feel that they've learned a lot from last year.

Edit: I don't mean to be flippant about this at all, but I don't know what the solution to this is. I hope there are serious consequences, but as long as we have such a heavily armed police and such widespread racism, it doesn't feel like much will change.

Why the hell was he reaching to taser him anyway? A 75$ fine (with $81 admin charge because of course there is) should never, NEVER require that kind of intervention. All this stuff about de-escalation training is just MOAR MONEY PLS and the time for that has absolutely gone.

How does a traffic violation end up in someone getting shot? What kind of COWBOY LAND is that. Write the fucking number plate down if they flee. Jesus.

The amount of people saying "he shouldn't have run, that's why they shot him" :manson: The fucking BOOTLICKING and brainwashing going on. Who the fuck was in danger if this kid drove off over an £80 fine? And why is it so acceptable to these GHOULS for the police to have the power to GUN DOWN PEOPLE WILLY NILLY? Imagine if it happened here, and they gunned down any kid that ran from the police? How many of us would still be around - I know I'd be dead. Maybe Kate Garraway would shut the fuck up then.
