Ugh I forgot 'Put Your Arms Around Me' (so STOP!!!!!! - one of my favourite endings ever)

Also 'Insane' and 'Breathless' are lovely and the latter could and should have been (yet) another single off the parent album.

I had a few days where I was OBSESSED with Put Your Arms Around Me last year. It's SO emotional.

Breathless is an absolute gem. But it should be called Hold Me Tight because I always forget its name...

Getaway is an INCREDIBLE song - it's the morning walk to the beach after a breakfast of strawberries to Summer Son's evening prowl to the club after four daiquiries :disco:

The first three albums really had some great stuff on them.
 
Red Book is so underrated.

That being said I'm not super familiar with their discography really..

They did and you could only ever discover them if you went back there because after "I Don't Want A Lover" they fell off the radar completely for almost a decade. It's amazing they were able to keep churning out albums because WOB was album number FOUR I think, before they received any serious success?

"So In Love With You" is fabulous. As is "Everyday Now" and "Alone With You"
 
I just shuffled Texas on my phone. I Don't Want A Lover came on first and I'm not sure why but that amused me. I think Sharleen would approve
 
I've been on a Texas binge all day. I'd forgotten what a fantastic band they are. White On Blonde and The Hush are pretty much flawless. Absolutely love Careful What You Wish For and Jump On Board too!

I really need to check out those first three albums. For some reason I've always though "Probably not for me".
 
It always amuses me that they and Sharleen in particular seem to be perceived as a bit of a joke, because they made (and sometimes still make) some incredible music and let's face it, there weren't an abundance of British hands of their ilk doing that then or now

They sold quite well in France and Spain luckily after Southside, otherwise we'd have no WOB.
YES with you 100% on those songs love them
 
The Hush is one of my favourite albums. It's so familiar and the songwriting is top notch.

Their greatest hits was MASSIVE. It's a shame that commercially nosedived from then on

Blame "Carnival Girl".

I still feel like Red Book underperformed compared with what came before though. Maybe it's just my own interest in them dwindled but I felt like there was a perceived shift in attitude, like they were a bit past it
 
They released a Greatest Hits at the height of their success which is a CURSE for any act.

"Red book" repaired a little of the damage of the previous album, it was a massive uphill battle for them at that point

They'd definitely crossed over from Radio 1 to Radio 2 territory by 2005. Despite being around since the 80s, I've always lumped peak Texas in with the likes of Travis and those other mid-to-late 90s indie bands. I think they were typecast after White on Blonde/The Hush.
 
Texas weren’t always a joke. I think that radio 2 adult pop sound has just dated, as it does (see also Gabrielle, Simply Red, many more). It’s cyclical I think. Phil Collins was massively recognised as tacky and dated in the noughties and these days he’s almost mythical now!

from WOB through to The Greatest Hits they were played everywhere and very, very popular. I agree that a hits album when you’re peaking is a risky move but theirs felt more like a story so far set, because there had been so much music we missed in the early 90s when they were more of an underground band. I also agree about Carnival Girl. If they’d come back with the right song they might have kept it up a bit longer. Yeah it was a successful album but it killed their reputation.
 
I really don't get the hate for Carnival Girl? At least they were pushing themselves and trying something different, and ultimately it's a catchy song. I dunno...I think it's fine.

from someone else maybe. Even though Texas were known for combining genres, this just felt like an experiment too far. Sharleen has very deftly moved from rock to country to Motown to R&B, but Carnival Girl, whatever pseudo world music you’d file it under, just wasn’t believable.

I always assumed she was trying to recapture Say What You Want (All Day Every Day), which I also didn't like but was popular, but it didn't click
 
It did feel a bit “rent a rapper” passed the peak of the trend, and the video is CRINGE. Personally I really like the song and it works much better in the context of the album and I don’t think it was a disaster, but I can see how it didn’t work as the comeback single from Texas.
