Whatev's Christina Aguilera Top 50!

...by the time you'd heard it twice and decided conventional enjoyment is overrated.

I remember Edith Bowman on MTV saying she thought the I Turn To You video was paedophilic. Jealousy is a killer in this industry.
:D @ “conventional enjoyment”

As if anyone gives a shit what Edith fucking Bowman thinks!

Is the Letterman performance the one where she almost shakes her head into a new hairstyle but it magically doesn't?

You Lost Me is really something else

I stand with @funky on this one, the idol perf really felt like a moment (to a bunch of online gayz only :( )

It should have been number 1 for 18 weeks

I had no idea I Turn To You was on the Space Jam soundtrack

Falsas Esperanzas
Mi Reflejo (2000)

"False Hopes" was the early standout of the new tracks on Mi Reflejo and was released as the album's third single. She promoted it quite heavily with live performances, including at the Grammys, which I remember staying up really late to watch and thinking she was omg-amazing (and clearly anorexic). I just love the song because it's so fun and you can't help but dance around the kitchen to it, thrusting your hips in all the right places.

Highlight: 2:03 is where the fun really starts.

Falsas Esperanzas live at the Grammy Awards 2001 - from 1:40

The fireworks! The band! The dancing! The DREADS!

A retro moment of gypsy whatever...

Sounds shit now tbh :square:

Woohoo

Christina Aguilera Feat. Nicki Minaj
Bionic (2010)

I thought this was going to be HUGE. It was miles ahead of Not Myself Tonight in terms of its contemporary sound. Imagine what the video could have BEEN! Plans to shoot one ended up being scrapped - I guess it was TOO MUCH for everyone and they panicked. Released as the second single, it bombed at #79 in the US and #148 in the UK. As a review in The Guardian put it, "If you're going to do a five-minute song about cunnilingus, it's a good idea to enlist foul-mouthed rapper Nicki Minaj, whose bug-eyed contribution lends the proceedings an air of gripping abandon." My only criticism is that the boring outro goes on for too long.

Highlight: 3:27 "YEAH!"

What an honour

WooHoo would have benefitted from a RADIO EDIT. I used to have one in my ipods but always assumed it was fanmade.

El Beso Del Final
Mi Reflejo (2000)

OH MY GOD I just want to SCREAM and CRY whilst clutching my WEAVE in a STORM to this fucking amazing song! Even though I have NO IDEA what it's about! It's just so DRAMATIC. I believe the title translates as "The Final Kiss". Her voice is absolutely incredible - loads of Mariah-esque melisma to enjoy from the very opening moans to the gorgeous high notes at the end - she could really SING. Beautiful warm harmonies on the choruses complement the spanish guitar/castanet backing track perfectly. PLEASE listen to it!

Highlight: 2:45 onwards is WONDERFUL (I'm not going to write out the Spanish).

How many iPods do you have, Pipo? I hope there's a special Xtina one.

Used to have 3 of them but they all got stolen from me because that's Mexico to you hun x

Nowadays as a Spotify user it grinds my gears we don't have a Radio Edit for this masterpiece. Who even has 5 minutes for WooHoo?

Makes Me Wanna Pray
Back To Basics (2006)

TAKE ME TO CHURCH, CHRISTina! What a great way to open an album (if you skip the stupid Intro). This is a full throttle "THANK YOU, FATHER" gospel romp that even noted former gospel choir member and Songs of Praise star @dUb can't deny. Written by Kara DioGuardi, Xtina and Rich Harrison of Crazy In Love fame, and produced by the latter two, it's based on a sample from the 1970 song "Glad" by English rock band Traffic. Yes it's quite shouty but that's kind of the POINT and it sounds like pure JESUS FILLED JOY to me.

Highlight: 2:52 "Makes me wanna (PRAY!), makes me need to (PRAY-AY-AY!), when I'm feelin' low and all alone, you're the light in my DAAAAY (OHHH YAY!)"

Dirrty

Christina Aguilera Feat. Redman
Stripped (2002)

I mean, COME ON. This was such a borderline genius/crazy risky move, a huge gamble which paid off THANK GOD. It's just a load of NOISE really, isn't it? How did it become such a big hit? In the UK at least - it went platinum and even won Best Single at the Q Awards (!) in 2003, while it only made #48 in the US. Produced by Rockwilder, whom SHE approached after he had produced Lady Marmalade, I was totally in love with it from the first time I heard it on the radio, but I was more surprised that anyone when it went to #1. It was more than just a song - it was a whole disgusting, grimy, sexy, sweaty, writhing in-the-club MOVEMENT. Jeez, what I must have looked like dancing to this in lace-up-crotch jeans and a string vest (HOT). I probably played it every day in my first year at uni in halls. It was easily my favourite song for a long time, but overplaying has slightly rubbed some of its charm away. I know the word gets thrown around a lot by internet gayz nowadays but the David LaChapelle video was (and remains) genuinely ICONIC. It has 123 million YouTube hits. Amazing dancing and costumes - and the water! Also love the song that inspired it, Let's Get Dirty by Redman.

Highlight: ALL OF IT but Redman's rap is the cherry on top.

Still a bit odd, musically speaking given the hip-hop sound, how Dirrrty was massive in the UK but flopped (chart wise) in the US. All driven by the content not the music. Just reminds you how conservative America can be (and how much us Brits love a bit of soft porn)

"Dirrty" still felt a like major hit in America although it never made the top 40. It also spent 5 months on the chart despite peaking at #48. Not everyone can do that.

Can't Hold Us Down
Christina Aguilera Feat. Lil' Kim

Stripped (2002)

Talk about AHEAD OF ITS TIME. Watching the David LaChapelle-directed video now really is quite something - it's like she predicted #MeToo and #BLM seventeen years ago! Wasn't this where the black hair/deep tan look was unveiled? Apparently it's been cited as an example of cultural appropriation by certain scholars, while others argue that it highlights her Irish-Ecuadorian ethnicity! I'm a big fan of Lil' Kim and doesn't she look amazing in the pre-messy-surgery video. Such a shame they never once performed this live together. Her cameo, complete with out-of-tune vocals, gives the track that extra street cred; without it, I think Ghettotina would've probably been ridiculed (even more). Rumoured to be about Eminem, the lyrics to this feminist anthem cleverly address gender-related double standards, while the Scott Storch jerky dancehall beat is addictive. It was released as the fourth single, got nominated for a Grammy and peaked at #12 in the US (#6 in the UK).

Highlight: 3:35 "All my girls, AROUND the world!"

Nobody Wants To Be Lonely
Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin

Sound Loaded (2001)

Sandwiched between the release of her Spanish album and Lady Marmalade was this little gem, recorded back in the day when Ricky was still in the closet. The original solo version appeared on his second English language album (he also recorded it in Spanish), but it was this duet version that went on to become a major worldwide hit, reaching #1 in several European countries, #4 in the UK and #13 in the US, despite being one of the first major singles not to have a commercial CD release there. Produced by the ever reliable Walter Afanasieff and co-written by Desmond Child, I do think it's a great song and I never tire of it, but it's Xtina's soaring vocals that really enhance its dramatic mood and make it extra special. The vocal arrangement is nicely done, too. It looks strangely like they've been super-imposed onto their backgrounds in the video, but I like the simplicity of it and think she looks beautiful (if a little bit too thin). The song was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration at the Grammys but lost out to Lady Marmalade, HA! I remember them giving excellent live performances (well, her anyway) on things like the World Music Awards, which I would watch over and over again. Watching them again in 2020 it's almost funny to see that there's ZERO chemistry there. I bet she never returns his calls.

Highlight: 3:24 "It's LONGing to HOLD you!" and 3:49 "Let me love yoooooooooooou..." *whistle*

TASTE!

oh wow i forgot just how delicious Ricky used to be!

don't get me wrong, i'd still let him destroy my wap any day of the week in 2020. we're not ageist in this household.

Dirrty was the first of the big tour de force lead singles that became en vogue and expected for a while. It was grubby as hell and I'm still gaping from it. It should have been banger after banger after this.
