I had no idea everyone loved This Time. Thought it was just me. It’s incredible isn’t it. It’s her rock-opera. She made a real mistake not having it on the epic Velvet Rope tour. Has she ever performed it live? I can just imagine visuals accompanying that orchestral breakdown

I like the Joni Mitchell one, that one with the big dance routine in what looks like a sewer, and the one about riding dick.

I struggle to connect to Control and Rhythm Nation as albums because they just WEREN'T THAT BIG in the UK, so I have little in the way of nostalgia or memories of them. If ONLY we'd had YouTube :D

Janet really started to pop off on my radar with Thats The Way Love Goes for me. Similar to Mariah and Dream Lover really.

Yes, same. Maybe it’s my/our age though. I remember hearing about her and Rhythm Nation being shown on TOTP/The Chart Show one time, which was the first time I realised Michael Jackson had a singing sister. I know her first album was in 1982 and of course knew them all later, but when people refer to Janet as one of the 1980s superstars alongside Madonna and Whitney, it doesn’t register as she was far more of star in the 90s. It’s definitely a case of personal perception though as she clearly played concert arenas for the RN1814 tour. I was just too young and more in to New Kids on the Block at the time :eyes:

I honestly have so little memories of any of it aside from Rhythm Nation on TOTP. I think I'd heard When I Think Of You on the radio a bit, and was sort of aware of Nasty but that was IT. I first heard Black Cat as a Kéllé Bryan live cover on an Eternal single b-side :D

janet. is definitely my favourite Janet record. and it's not about age or anything because I don't think I discovered her AT ALL until 2004 and my first actual album was either Damita Jo or DISCIPLINE! the industrial sonic palette* and relentless energy of that album is just BEYOND, it's a homosexual fever dream.

*I think janet. may have been quite a prime influence on Born This Way in many senses (including the most cultural, spoken in future tense).

Justice for This Time :disco: the 1-2-3 punch of You Want This, If and This Time is possibly the greatest run of songs on any album ever. Supreme.

The opening half of EV3 says hello :disco: but yes I agree

Was she in some kind of dispute with the record label during janet? Looking back it’s a bit odd that they only really properly promoted two of the singles, after coming off a strategy of releasing almost the entire album of Control and Rhythm Nation. They also only included 2 tracks from it on the greatest hits a couple years later. Ironic given the album had about 9 potential singles.

She really hit it out the park with Unbreakable. I hope such standards have been maintained.

Quite the opposite. She was newly signed to Virgin Records under quite a lucrative deal. The lack of janet. songs on Design of a Decade was due to the label switch and conflicts there.

I'm not really sure what the reaction to it was at the time, but Rock With U has REALLY just kept improving for me.
I'd love an EP of this slinky sound from her. Was the rest of Discipline similar? I haven't listened in YEARS!

Oh PLEASE! There’s loads more, but I’m just going to leave you with the following two sets:

Better The Devil You Know
Step Back In Time
What Do I Have To Do

Hangin’ On The Telephone
One Way Or Another
Picture This

to prove the fact that, quite simply...YOU’RE DISMISSED.
