Best vocalists from 90s-00s pop groups

The Spice Girls sound is the intersection of three voices: Emma, Mel C and Mel B. Without MB on the low parts, a think a lot of their songs would lack a certain depth. The interplay between Mels B and C at the end of Viva Forever is just sublime. Same for her her 2 Become 1 outro.

:D at this thread turning into yet another SPICE SCRAP

it started as an All Saints one and we weren't complaining! I can make this into a Fifth Harmony one if you'd like. I'll go first.

Camilla Cabello is a CRAP singer who shouldn't keep having all these chances at a cheap hit, she's not going to happen EVER. Normani was the true star.

I agree that she is nothing special, but saying she isn’t going to happen is a bit off. She has 3 billion spotify streams simply from her two biggest singles alone.

Normani may be the TRUE STAR (honestly she's being wasted on her BUZZ CAREER) but Lauren is the best vocalist.

From the original list, the only one who I think makes such an impact that I genuinely don't believe the group would have had the same success without them, is Claire from Steps. She made that group; she still does. You might hate her, she always seems to go down as the least favourite bar H which disgusts me, but that level of powerhouse vocals is what made their songs so magnificent as opposed to just good pop songs most of the time. It's why she was lead and why she still is. The absurdity of even discussing an "even distribution of vocals" in that group! And I'm glad that she remains at the head, the true anchor, even while allowing everyone else a moment.

Faye however is so so good that in most other groups she would probably qualify as the lead in her own right. So despite what I said about Claire, they had somebody really strong in the background which only strengthened them further. But Claire is one of the best lead group singers of all time for me.

She’s no Appleton though

I agree with @Beverley. Mutya's tone is everything. I think that texturally, Mutya and Mel B are my favourite British girlband vocalists. Easther Bennett being, of course, the best technical vocalist, in terms of range, power and resonance.

We probably need another topic on favourite voices, although for what it's worth I would probably always go with Imperial Era Mariah and mid-late 90s Lauryn Hill, whose tone and texture is just *chef's kiss*

well that’s venturing into R&B not pop but I’d say early 90s Mariah and Whitney are the pinnacle, regardless of genre, of that entire era. Even though they are a specific sound and the likes of Lauryn and Erykah were also faultless in their own style, you can’t really touch Mariah and Whitney. Celine would be the closest competition but I don’t think she had the creativity of Mariah and Whitney. Mariah’s Unplugged and Whitney’s concert for the troops cannot he matched and have probably still not been matched to this day - by Ariana, by Gaga, by anyone

but if we go back to groups, we have to mention En Vogue. By far and away the greatest vocal band of all time.

oh the original 4 for sure. But that's the majority of their discography anyway. And even the original 3 I'd take too. Dawn was a loss but they managed to maintain their gusto on EV3 at least.
