Those LA State of Mind sales never cease to amaze me. :o

YAY for emma being the only one to improve on her debut's sales.

What exactly happened to Mel C between album #1 and #2? Was the material just that weak?

A four year gap (always amazes me that artists/labels think they can wait so long to follow-up a debut), Spice mania having died, Spice FATIGUE being alive and well, the material being less strong, slightly questionable single choices...

Also a desire to clear the charts so that This Groove / Let Your Head Go could be #1 for the rest of time.

The quote I always come back to about Reason was that it sounded like it had been focus grouped into existence. It's not a dreadful record, but it's just so bland and tepid. I don't think her heart was really in it at the time.

I think a different lead single might have given it a stronger start, but there really wasn't much to choose from.

I quite like Here it comes again, but yes surely Melt would have been a better opener

See I always thought Here It Comes Again was a potential #1. Similar to the stuff Appleton were pushing at the time and that big anthem type of sound.

Evidently that couldn't have been further from the truth.

I remember just being rather pleased at how well Mel C looked again after the Northern Star era.

I just found a list from 2007, thought it'd be interesting to look at how the back cat has sold in the past 13 years.

Melanie C - Northern Star: 884,055 (892,935 in 2020, +8,880)
Geri Halliwell - Schizophonic: 483,419 (487,445 in 2020, +4,026)
Geri Halliwell - Scream If You Wanna Go Faster: 146,584 (148,301 in 2020, +1,717)
Emma Bunton - Free Me: 140,351 (142,643 in 2020, +2,292)
Emma Bunton - A Girl Like Me: 124,201 (127,952 in 2020, +3,751)
Melanie C - Reason: 101,418 (102,550 in 2020, +1,132)
Melanie B - Hot: 52,788 (53,676 in 2020, +888)
Victoria Beckham - Victoria Beckham: 52,016 (53,938 in 2020, +1,922)
Emma Bunton - Life in Mono: 53,918 (47,767 in 2020, +6,151 :o)
Melanie C - Beautiful Intentions: 26,478 (28,818 in 2020, +2,340)
Geri Halliwell - Passion: 10,000 (10,954 in 2020, +954)
Melanie C - This Time: 9,939 (14,934 in 2020, +4,995)
Mel B - L.A. State of Mind: 1,510 (1,963 in 2020, +453)

I briefly got quite excited about Life In Mono's STRONG BACK CAT SALES, but then I realised it came out at Christmas 2006, so it was probably just in a lot of discount sales in 2007. :D

Also mildly surprised that A Girl Like Me has stronger sales than Free Me, but I guess the former has a #1 hit on it, so...

All this, and it was released on Mel B's own label, she didn't really promote it, the reviews were pretty uniformly bad, and I gather it wasn't the sort of music you'd be expecting from Mel Beh (if indeed, you'd be expecting anything at all. She probably had the lowest profile of all the girls post Forever)

I say this with a heavy heart, but L.A. State of Mind is honestly in the top (bottom?) 5 worst albums I have ever heard in my life.

Although I've listened to it all the way through at least once, which is more than I can say for My Happy Place :(

This Time was released in 2007, so presumably the vast majority of those sales came in the weeks immediately following this sales update.

L.A. State of Mind came out in 2005.

I love this excerpt from the album's wiki page.

Brown had announced that the Grammy-winner Darkchild would produce some songs, but declined to give visibility to her friends, the independent producers Kevin Malpass and Laurie Jay.

Definitely not written by her friends, the independent producers Kevin Malpass and Laurie Jay.

It was turned down by Appleton no less!

I want to know so much more about those 453 people who've bought L.A. State of Mind in the last 13 years.

I have a stupid question about this. WHERE have they bought it? I mean, I don't think the record company actually made more than 2k odd copies of an album that was doomed from the start and I assume it's one of those albums that have become a staple in online marketplaces like Ebay and Amazon so it's kind of baffling how people have managed to BUY it first hand post 2005.

It must be entirely streaming.

Fair point. I think when it made #454 or whatever it only sold about 600 or something, so how on earth it managed to end up with triple that is actually quite impressive.

Not on Spotify: Let Your Head Go, This Groove, Half of Me

Emma's Free Me album and singles aren't on Spotify either, at least not in mainland Europe. I've been told they're working on getting it up though.

I also emailed Victoria's business partner at the weekend demanding This Groove/Let Your Head Go be added, by popular demand. No response yet. :D

Free Me is on Spotify in the UK.

I can't believe Europe has been robbed of YEARS of streaming 'Crickets Sing for Anamaria'.

Here's what I wrote!

Hi beb,

Hope you're well - I was just emailing to find out if there's any prospect of Victoria's missing music (This Groove/Let Your Head Go) finding its way to Spotify. A group of Spice Girls fans online are pretty keen to make it happen, but I understand that Moody owns the rights so I wondered if you could shed any light on the possibility of this. 17 years have passed, somehow, but we haven't forgotten these 2 brilliant tracks...

Thanks very much,
VB stan 4ever xo

Maybe being on about three times as many as the other three singles from the album combined is quite :disco:

I'm surprised Schizo didn't finish closer to Northern Star. I guess Mel C's 3 strong pop songs really outshone Geri's jingles.
