HORROR

I bought the Rear Window 4k recently and it took me about 4 hours to watch it, cos I kept pausing it to gaze at the visuals.
 
Let The Right One In is another example of a supernatural movie that didn't scare me but I enjoyed nevertheless, because it was so well made.

I was just about to post that one! Yep, not scary at all, but just a really, really captivating film. The scene at the end in the pool is SO good.

The original Poltergeist is mostly very good too. There's some silly moments and it isn't scary, but there are really memorable scenes and visuals.
 
Relic was very good, very atmospheric.

Spiral is one I watched on Shudder recently that was much better than expected.

I've a few that haven't gotten around to yet but heard good things about - Daniel Isn't Real, Apartment 1A, Love & Monsters.

I much prefer stuff like Jaws, Jurassic Park, Predator, Alien, where people get EATEN :)

Also really like psychological horrors like Silence Of The Lambs, Se7en, The Sixth Sense etc.

I'm not terribly keen on most horror movies. In terms of really nasty shit that I did enjoy, Bone Tomahawk is a stand out.

Do you prefer really nasty stuff, then? I have to say I tend towards the more brutal end of the horror spectrum (Not the Saw-style torture porns, mind).

Although one of my very favourites is In a Glass Cage which is quite light on blood but every bit as disturbing.

It depends. I struggle to enjoy a horror film that doesn't have anything in mind except being really unpleasant. I think my main priority is that the filmmakers are trying to be in some way literary with the violence.
 
I only like Horror that is either truly scary or utterly hilarious. Anything else is boring. Unfortunately very little actually scares me these days so the really acclaimed stuff of late sends me to sleep. The Orphanage is still the last film that made me jump, and it's not for a lack of watching decent things.

So definitely not the Saw films, then.

I'm trying to muster the courage to watch A Serbian Film because it apparently is very worthwhile. It's SO dark that I can't imagine that I'll ever actually WANT to put myself through it.
 
I don’t get something like Serbian Film (I’ve read the Wikipedia for it). It just feels dirty, like what’s the point? It’s not saying anything.

I even found something like Don’t Breath gross and not in a fun way.

just watched the trailer - I like the look of that! at first I was thinking Ghost Ship which I have seen and was crap. Can’t believe that one passed me by

the 90s had some fun if daft monster movies. The Relic, about a monster lurking in the sewers under the natural history museum, was really good, If you can handle the crazy storyline about the monsters origins and the hammy dialogue... the jumps are good and all the classic monster tropes are in there

 
On the subject of torture porn- I have no interest in ever watching any of the Saw movies or anything if that Ilk, even the so called intelligent ones like Hostel. No thank you. I get a bit Mary Whitehouse about them but I think it’s so wrong how they’re subliminally marketed to teenagers.

On the other hand I love the 90s slasher revival, including all the Screams and the original IKWYDLS (the sequel was so bad). The other college horrors like The Faculty and Final Destination also good, although they’re not really scary. But they are another sub genre of horror I guess.
 
God I used to LOVE horror movies. There are so many good ones. Unfortunately after Enya was brought into my life I am forbidden to watch people getting hacked into pieces. :(

Deep Rising is one of those films that seems to have passed everyone by, despite it having a decent budget and cast. It because a go-to post pub watch for me and my old housemate because it's just great fun.
 
I'm really thinking I should do my top 50 horror films. I was planning a top 50 jump scares and a top 50 death scenes, but I honestly can't narrow the latter down to such a low number :D
 
I still think the greatest jump moment in cinema history is the underwater boat scene in Jaws. I’ve seen people physically jump into the air.

Ghostwatch - Literally every appearance of Pipes
