I wasn’t aware of her as being Charlene in Neighbours when ISBSL came out so I don‘t associate the two. Purely ISBSL onwards for me

:o

I loved the Golden tour but I’m honestly amazed that it took that for anyone to become a fan.

I think it was just seeing her live, and any previous tours would have probably had the same effect if I'd been at those instead!

I’m not going to pretend I was massively into pop music at the time. I bought I Should Be Should Be So Lucky on 7” BECAUSE it was Charlene singing and not for any other reason.

A trajectory of my diva obsession JOURNEY:

1997: Spice Girls
1999: Britney Spears
2002: Madonna
2003: Janet
2005: Cyndi Lauper
2007: Kylie
2008: Blondie/Debbie Harry
2014: Lana Del Rey

With respect to Kylie, I casually enjoyed her brief crossover as a USA hitmaker with CGYOOMH/LAFS but was too transfixed on Madonna and Britney at that time to care too much. I stumbled upon "Red Blooded Woman" when it was released here in early 2004 and liked it, but did not discover the rest of her catalog until early 2007 when I was following her post-cancer comeback. I remember checking SAYHEY EVERY DAY for any news on an album announcement. And then I migrated here upon the release of X. 2007/2008 was the peak of my fandom, I'd say.

I have voted "the POP comeback", although it's a bit blurry for me due to having eliminated most memories of my childhood as a kind of trauma defence mechanism :eyes:

I distinctly remember hearing Spinning Around on the radio - I was 9 then and had dabbled in Steps and the Spice Girls/had them pushed on me, but had yet to really discover music as an active passion. Then again with Head a year later - I remember hearing it and LAFS on the car radio constantly. I don't think I owned a copy of Fever at the time though - 2003 was really my great pop awakening, and the first songs I remember really stanning were Put The Needle On It by the other Min, Hollywood by Madonna and Trouble by P!nk. Around this time I started listening to the chart show on Radio 1 quite religiously. I remember being absolutely AGOG when Trouble went in at #7, having convinced myself it was a number one smash - imagine the tears of baby Jark. That really set the tone for a lot of disappointments to be endured later in life.

Anyway, SLOW was the song that really actively got me into Kylie. I remember watching the video and the behind-the-scenes on a music channel (and possibly masturbating to it?) and I think I played Body Language and then went back to Fever and Light Years - my friend's DAD was a huge Kylie fan with all the CDs so I burned them all from his collection and became fluent. Fever must be comfortably one of my most played albums ever. I Believe In You was also unescapable on UK radio in 2004 and it was perhaps that song which really cemented me as a forever stan. I didn't go back and start discovering pre-00s Kylie until maybe the time of Ultimate Kylie or even Showgirl Homecoming.

But let's say ON THE JARK RADAR since 2000 and an active stan since 2003/4.
POTY? :D

this timeline is everything. I'm living for the detail.

I realise now my post was absurdly extra. I must be getting sentimental as I approach THIRTY.

I feel the slight curse of V̶o̶R̶ POP! now that I look back in retrospect. Most of the divas careers happened to go TITS UP the album after I started stanning* :D

*with the exception of Britney, really, and the divas' who had not been competitive on the charts for decades.

I got her first 2 albums as Christmas presents in 1989, but by 1990 had moved onto Gloria Estefan :D

I certainly knew Better The Devil You Know (it was advertised either as being available at John Menzies or for John Menzies - either way the screen had a thick blue border), Step Back In Time (her performance on Des O'Connor was legendary for me), and loved Put Yourself In My Place, but it wouldn't be until 1998 or the following year that I caught back up with everything (except Let's Get To It), including even 2 double disc compilations with songs I'd never heard of before on them.

You know, even if she doesn't have everything neat and tidy , material wise she has mostly always been in ample supply.

You regretting it is EXTRA Jark.

I haven’t “stanned” another female pop star aside from her. I enjoy pop music but I’m not motivated to the point of fervently following someone’s career. My Kylie fandom was borne out of a happy coincidence - I was 10, I had been into Neighbours and Charlene and (something which people on moopy, not old enough to appreciate don’t realise) the enormity of her initial success in the UK (she was MASSIVE in this country in 1988) gave me a reason to be properly invested. Madge was undoubtedly this big American star at the time too (though not as big, that particular year) however since her breakthrough had come some years prior when perhaps I was too young to realise, I never really latched on. Anyway, I only really vaguely recall watching her perform at Live Aid prior to that (and my mum commenting on her bring extraordinarily beautiful) but she was nowt special to me. I did used to be a huge Prince nut as well (mainly as a result of a childhood friend liking him too) but my fandom fizzled out a bit in the early 00s. He was never omnipresent during my years of really being into him.

So in terms of pop music, Kylie just caught me at the right time I suppose.

She looks like an entirely different person than herself in that wig and makeup

that wit and the fresh face work was an INTERESTING combination

I'll file it under CREATIVE RISK TAKING

I always forget it was a Luke Evans as the soldier in that skit for Tears On My Pillow too.

I liked the show on the whole but fuck me were they fastidious about putting beautiful people up front in the crowd.
:D How did they police that?

BESIDES you can't even SEE any of the crowd in that video...

Eddie they just couldn't put you UP FRONT because they didn't want your STAR POWER to take the shine OFF KYLIE

OK now the trauma response that has been some of your more questionable choices now makes a lot more sense.

I intended to write a one line answer but I ended up with a stream-of-consciousness ramble. Oh well.

---

My sister had the debut, and (I think) the second album, alongside Jason's of course. We stanned. But then we forgot about her.

By the time I was avidly following the charts, she was onto the Impossible Princess era, and that was a *HATE* *giggles* if you had to make me play a reductive binary choice game, Oasis being the cooler proposition at the time.

Anyway, cut to Spinning Around, and I didn't really get it TBH. I remember online queens at the time shaking and crying over On A Night Like This, but again, she wasn't that girl for me.

So I guess, by process of elimination, I finally got fully onboard with Can't Get You Out of My Head. I probably would have been subconsciously biased to back VB at the time, but when you actually heard the two songs, it was impossible not to go Team Kylie.

I think I stayed interested through to Red Blooded Woman, famously Woman Shitting Red in my imagination, and then like most of the braindead public, I switched off until the Big C.

I was waiting for a Britney Circus style comeback with X, and then she farted out 2 Hearts and Wow (did anyone see Zane Lowe calling that a bop the other day? WTF was that about). Again I remember some queens on Moopy doing the 2007 equivalent of shaking and crying over In My Arms, but I never much cared for her. That album was all about The One, Speakerphone and Like A Drug for me.

All The Lovers was obviously a lovely moment, but the rest of the album was trash.

I lived for Timebomb.

And then Say Something was the first thing I loved in years.

Pretty much the beginning, Neighbours sticker albums, Channel 4 The Henderson Kids repeats and all. She pre-dates Madonna in my personal chronology by a couple of years as she was far more child friendly.

I was from the Neighbours era too! I remember getting Enjoy Yourself on cassette for my 7th birthday and just playing it to death as it was my first album.

I don’t fit into this. Enjoy Yourself is where I got on board. I HATE(D) I Should Be So Lucky and Locomotion but liked the other two singles from the debut, but didn’t buy it at the time.

Light Years was one of the first albums I ever bought. Loved a lot of songs on it. Then on dotmusic, I streamed the video for CGYOOMH and the first few seconds changed my world.

Not for that particular setup (it was a closed set) but essentially the rest of it was a casting call for crowd shots. I hadn’t quite got the memo. :oi:

Lou, you could have just gone for “other” and spared us the dissection.

Same, I was a Kylie fan from the start but I don't remember Madonna around the same time. I became a proper Madonna fan around 'Take A Bow'

Sorry that my answer was not "stanning since day 1 xoxo" but Ms. Ky still needs to deliver that killer album, and frankly I don't think she has it in her.

It was like that in the TOTP when I went up to see her or anyone else. People were ruthlessly shoved in and out of shot.
