Interestingly (well, :david:), Strictly beats GBBO in terms of live viewing by over 2m. But while Strictly's live viewing accounts for 67% of the total, for GBBO, live viewing only accounts for 44%.

I am quite enjoying GBBO for what it is but nothing beats Strictly to pass a cold dark Saturday night.

I imagine Strictly will break the 10m barrier quite comfortably for the first show proper in the chart next week.

IACGMOOH usually surpasses that GBBO figure I think? Well I think the first episode certainly does.

The Boris statement got an average of 14.2m last night. And Strictly was nearly a million up on last week (10.3m), presumably at least due in part to the follow on.

How many viewers did the first lockdown announcement in March get?

Countryfile is a strange programme, isn't it? My mother often has it on when I'm up there on Sundays, and it always seems to be shunted around in the schedule, which I assume is why it goes up and down the chart. Sometime it seems to be practically mid afternoon, others early evening. I can well imagine it's one of those shows people may not religiously tune into, but if you're flicking through the channels, you may land on it and watch quite happily.

The Sister got over 6.1m for the first episode, but then dropped to less than 4.5m by the last two episodes.

Still, like we were discussing elsewhere yesterday, it will pick up more viewers in the 28 day chart and beyond.

How are 4m people watching Spitting Image? I thought it was only on Britbox?

also when they count the soaps are they picking the highest rate of the week or the average across the week? They seem low. I remember different newspapers would do one or the other and it bugged me because the ratings were always different

For the soaps, news and dramas like The Sister this week with multiple episodes, I average them - otherwise the chart would only feature about 6 different programmes.

That totally makes sense, but it also makes sense that some episodes are getting higher ratings. So all is well.

For comparison purposes, these are the highest and lowest episodes for the three soaps

Coronation Street 6.902m/5.958m
Emmerdale 5.804m/5.148m
EastEnders 5.053m/4.071m

I don't hate it, but it is strange/slightly galling that it becomes a ratings beast and usually used by the BBC as a kind of anchor in January/February. That said, it's not without merit at all. I'd rather that did well than the fucking ONE SHOW for example.

I remember in the 90s it used to be a Sunday early afternoon show didn't it? I have fond memories of watching it with my nan while she supped her gin and reached for another Silk Cut. No idea when or why it was promoted to primetime.

His Dark Materials will find a larger audience on iPlayer or similar than any other programme on that chart I'm sure, but it must sting for the BBC that it was nearly 4 million down on the debut episode last year.

I'm not sure I even know what it is. It's Marvin and Rochelle, isn't it?

Yes. They play short clips of songs and the contestants have to name the song and artist. All genres and eras are catered for. It’s really rather good for a quiz show, but I think that is only because I love music.
