And Just Like That... (Sex & The City revival)

It’s officially official: Sex and the City is returning to the small screen via a limited series revival at HBO Max. The news was confirmed late Sunday on social media by returning leads Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, who will reprise their signature roles as Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda, respectively.

As we reported in December, Kim Cattrall — who has been very public about her desire to put the franchise, her co-stars and her character of Samantha, behind her — will not be involved in the quasi-seventh season.

In an October 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, Cattrall implored SATC‘s creative team to recast the role of Samantha with a non-white actress. “It’s a great part,” she said at the time. “I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And another actress should play it. Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones, or a Hispanic Samantha Jones.”

The original series, of course, ran for six seasons on HBO and spawned two movies. The show garnered numerous Emmys during its time on the air — including wins for stars Parker and Nixon.

Longtime Sex and the City EP Michael Patrick King will serve as showrunner/EP on the revival.

I'm CURIOUS.

Obviously, the second movie was a mistake. But I think as long as the show regains its self-awareness (in as much as it ever had a grasp on reality), it'll be okay.

There are plenty of stories to tell with a group of women in their mid-50s, as long as they actually try to tell them. I'd guess most of the kids are now old enough to have stories in their own right, so that should go some way to filling the Kim Cattrall-sized gap.

A pity Cattrall isn't being a sport, but I liked her line about playing S'mamph past the finish line and then some (and the dig about the show's representation of non whites). An even bigger pity that her latest vehicle was cancelled before I have even watched it.

I like that she’s not trying to derail it, she just doesn’t want to do it. Recasting would be a reasonable idea?

or in the first scene at brunch they can cold open “omg you guys I can’t believe Samantha got killed by Geri Halliwell”

I'm so over this. I was rewatching some of the older episodes and I was reminded how poorly written it was for the most part and also that it hasn't really aged well at all. It was fun for a while but towards the end and with the awful films it just became a bit of monstrosity really.

Unless they really revamp the writing and update it in the era of MeToo and add proper substance to it (which they won't because, well, it's MPK and SJP 4-eva!!! :manson: ) and also make up for the huge Kim C-shaped hole, this will fall flat on its face.

(Obviously I can't wait to watch this. Just wasn't sure if the diatribe made that clear?)

This is going to be catastrophic isn’t it?

JUSTICE 4 KIM

HBO Max is apparently reviving several retired tv shows. I don’t think it sounds that promising at all and I really have no apetite for more episodes. It felt like a great show when I bingewatched it back then, but now it feels terribly dated and stupid.

With that being said, I’m in the minority of thinking the second movie was great fun. It was ridiculous with lots of nice clothes and rich women making fool of themselves.*

*naturally it became totally obsolete as soon as the cast of Housewives of Melbourne went to Dubai and made history there.

Sadly, Jane and Cynthia Nixon apparently hate each other. Naturally I fully blame the SATC bitch, as Jane is clearly a Goddess walking this earth.

Did we know this isn't being CALLED Sex And The City? Apparently it's being called 'And Just Like That..."
Is "And Just Like That..." even a particularly well-remembered catchphrase from the show?

And recasting Samantha would be such a poisoned chalice for the new actress, it's not as if she was a BIT PART. It could be potentially career-ruining if they aren't perfect.
I'd write in a couple of new supporting characters (ideally NON-WHITE!), alongside bringing back characters like Stanford to expand upon their roles PERSONALLY.

I guess renaming it suggests they aren't going to recast Samantha anyway.

Jennifer Hudson getting ready to reprise her role :eyes:

Anyway let’s be real here, even if it isn’t called SATC everyone will call it that anyway

Considering Kim Catrall hates Sarah and doesn't want to be involved it wouldn't surprise me if she asked them to kill Samantha off. Her just not being there for unexplained reasons wouldn't make sense.

A selection of the icons from the show's spiritual successor NEED to make a cameo too, and I'm genuinely NOT JOKING!
