Interesting/ annoying things about the UK

Do people in other countries have a 'front room', which is basically a living room with all of your good furniture in that you're never allowed to go in except on special occasions? That's always struck me as a uniquely British, working class thing.
:D My family home has one with a proper posh wood burner. It’s only ever used for “entertaining” and showing off, which they used to do quite frequently before 2020.

London public transport is incredible, the rest of the UK is pretty dire though.

I’m British, and I’ve read up on it several times, and I still don’t entirely understand what the House of Lords do.
Obviously they're undemocratic but they do provide a check on the House of Commons. I did discover through my dissertation that they were essential for getting the decriminalisation of homosexuality and abortion through in the 1960s as they were unelected and could get unpopular laws through by having no voters to answer to.

I guess this is not that common, but I've seen houses with the loo and the rest of the bathroom in different rooms. Why?

My house in the UK has this "feature". It's a constant source of INTERNATIONAL FRISSON :eyes:

I don’t like when times in the afternoon are written like 14:00 or 20:00

of course this is a problem for me literally only on Moopy, so it’s a bit of a self-caused problem

I can't speak for all the connections around the UK but the fact that there is PRETTY MUCH a train an hour from London to all major UK cities I still find astonishing after all this time.

There are TWO (sometimes THREE) direct trains a day from the biggest city in Galicia (where my family lives) to Madrid.

I just made a sandwich for lunch today. I do miss the M&S Rotisserie counter next to the office. Quality roast chicken, gravy and veg all for £5 :(

Wow and we complain about our trains.

Although as an occasional user I generally don't.

I would add more things that I find weird but I know it's us :D (time for meals...)
Oh god yes you're not alone there! Boomers having their dinner at like 5pm! The younger generations are less weird though.

The eating times is also related to hours of light and working patterns innit? I'm a lot more in favour of the 9-5 way of life favoured in the UK compared to getting home around 8pm and having dinner around 9.30 on a school night.

WTF!? I can't imagine having dinner before 9 pm. And if you go out for dinner during the weekend (and there is no pandemic) you can be easily enjoying your dessert at midnight :)
Spain has notoriously odd eating habits.
