Interesting/annoying things about the USA

Well it posted twice so ill use this second post to say that open container laws are stupid too

There are entire dry counties in Georgia

School and college life as portrayed by American media is also fucking weird.

I think it might be a semantics thing. I call the person I live with my roommate but we don’t actually share a bedroom. I’ve only actually shared a room with a stranger for one year. It was terrible

Yes. I was horribly bullied at school but I think I'd be a gibbering wreck to this day if I'd been over there.

Definitely the portrayal that people seem to be a bit defined by their college, with some kind of lifelong alliance to a university. I suppose it’s the closest thing they have to peerage.

I mean we have cliques in education in the UK, but it's all apparently so identikit in the US.

Isn't it quite normal at college though? Or can you just tell I'm watching Buffy at the moment

I think the education thing is more of a movie/tv thing. My school didn’t have “jocks” and “nerds” or however it’s portrayed. I also was never bullied and I don’t think it was common at all.

the sharing a room thing is common, but only in your first year or two of college. I agree it’s terrible

we did have “campus police” (resident advisors) when I lived in a dorm

My university had a set of "duplex" rooms where you'd have one person on the ground floor and one up in a mezzanine, but that was as close as it got to sharing. They were the cheapest rooms, of course.

When I was in halls last year all halls apart from The Bins, Hulme had their own EN-SUITE :zsazsa:

When I was in New York, I went into a public toilet and the toilets had no cubicles. I witnessed a quite unpleasant man having a shit

Was it in Washington square park?

When I was in New York I heard a man shout at another man in an alley “HEY YOU CAN’T SHIT ON ME MAN, THAT’S ILLEGAL!”

That explains it!

In my halls (demolished now of course) we had cubicles and a shower shared between 12 people (half of whom were TRAINEE TEACHERS with nits).

But we did have sinks in our rooms, so I guess that's sort of like an en suite.

Yes, WHY do public toilet cubicles in the US have such wide gaps in the doors? Have they heard of privacy?

Edit - dUb beat me to it.

Sounds like Cavendish to me :D

my guess would be to discourage drug deals (wish wsp is a hot spot for that) but I don’t actually know
I was offered weed there, didn't understand what he meant and declined. I really wanted some as well.

When I was a terrible bartender, I was so terrible at bartending that they sent me to the bathroom to stop people doing drugs.

If I saw two pairs of feet, I had to bang on the door and tell them to come out. If they didn't, I had to PUSH OPEN THE DOOR.

It all ended in tears when I kicked open the door on a girl who'd taken her shoes off to have a shit.

Sorry, that had nothing to do with the USA, I just wanted to share.

Not sure if I prefer @Rhythmbarbican catching two pensioners fucking in an M&S toilet or this story in terms of toilet stories I've read this week.
