How will we react to the next major virus?

Curious of Moopy's thoughts. :disco: Outbreaks, epidemics, even pandemics are not uncommon - there are several every decade, and I wonder if it will be normal and accepted that we do everything we did this time around, or if this experience will be so fresh for people that they refuse. Perhaps a sharp division?

I think the last one myself - many will be pro-shutdown, but then there will be a large group of individuals who have little to no trust in the government or in public health.

I'm sure all governments of the world outside of Asia will say it's nothing to worry about and refuse to shut anything down or take any precautions until we have a hundred thousand dead, because "the economy can't take the hit" :eyes:

not sarcasm sadly!

I don’t think we’ll see anything like last April for a long time (in terms of compliance). It’ll be more half-assed and with some people not complying

“luckily” we will already own masks so that will be easier to start if needed

"We know as a government Eat Out To Help Out was a misguided, irresponsible idea at a time of recovery, so this year, before we go into lockdown in 7 days time, we'd like to encourage you ALL to Eat Out To Help Out, and support our amazing hospitality industry before they face another period of unprecedented struggle. Boost your morale before lockdown, Britain, and theirs. Then stay safe, and stay home!"

Judging by what we’ve learnt about humans over the last 12 months, we’ll probably react exactly the same way as last time, and learn absolutely nothing.

I actually think we'll do the opposite and go really extreme if there's another similar virus in the future. If EVERY country had acted like New Zealand and Australia did, we could have saved MILLIONS of lives overall and surely that's obvious. Their economies have been hit no more or less than the countries that lost hundreds of thousands of lives and they got back to normality quicker. Surely we have to learn from that?!

SURELY?!?!?!!?!?!

I kind of agree, but also to the extent that i think governments may end up being a bit more trigger happy for things which are less dangerous.

In a world where the flu doesn't exist, we'd be going into lockdown if it suddenly arose for the first time in 2023.

Yes I agree - I think they'll be over cautious now. Which is fine by me, if it's quick and sorted out in a month rather than this painful 18 months we've had (or will have had by the end of it all).
