It's A Sin (new Russell T Davies drama)

I have never watched Banana but watched episode 1 of that today off the back of enjoying this. I'm enjoying that so far. Obviously very different tone, but works for me!

Banana actually is pretty good on the whole, way better than Cucumber

I've never seen either. Were they both released at exactly the same time if I remember rightly?

Yes. Cucumber was Channel 4, Banana E4 and there was a discussion show or something that was 4oD or YouTube I think.

I've still not seen this. I can't quite face it yet.

There's folk on my FB saying they couldn't believe the gays had it so bad!

Honestly gay history needs to taught in schools. Just one hour in a curriculum, but the lack of knowledge is outstanding.

Honestly Ag, I even feel as a gay man that I didn't realise certain things from this show. So can't imagine how little straights knew...

I spoke to my Mum about this recently and it emerged that she thought HIV/AIDS had been CURED! The ignorance of straights.

I just had a message from my STOP FUCKING HATE reading, Trump supporting father telling me I need to watch this new show called “It’s A Sin”. It’s incredible.
I’m quite gobsmacked. I can’t imagine him watching all the sex scenes and not switching it off in disgust.

What I’m finding weird is the amount of straight people that I know who keep asking me about the programme. Like, cause I’m gay, I am the person to discuss it with. Only last night, a friend’s wife who I don’t know that well DM’d me saying “watching it’s a sin, didn’t realise it was so bad”. Like I’m supposed to have an opinion on that for her.

It’s kind of stereotyping that because I’m gay I have to engage with it and, though it doesn’t upset me or anything, it’s just odd.

Week by week I’m seeing more people posting about it - and more conversations happening on those posts.
Most, though not all, are from women but it’s great to see this show generating conversation.

That’s not so unusual though is it? I mean I know our Bev has said before (apologies if I’m paraphrasing incorrectly) that for example there’s a news story about racism, PoCs are made to feel obligated to have a comment or stance on it in front of white people.

for some people, you will be the only person in a particular group that they can get any context from (even if you don’t really have any). I guess it’s the Paul Gambuccini effect.

Better to talk to us than only their other straight/white/cis/etc friends, I guess?

I’m not sure it IS unusual, but it just feels odd. I also made the point that I don’t hate it, it’s just strange.

Oh god I loved this, broke my heart and I couldn't stop thinking about it :( Poor Colin, how lovely was Jill etc etc.

My 60 year old manager said she watched it and loved it and now this weekend she’s said she’s watching Queer As Folk :D

It was strange to think that this was within my lifetime, and to think how far we've come. And all the parallels with the current epidemic.

It reminded me of an incident about 15 years ago at work where I saw a colleague put a pair of gloves on to deal with a person with HIV. Seems shocking now to do that.

I just have episode 5 to watch, and am bracing myself for the inevitable. I was absolutely destroyed when Colin died. :(

I was initially confused why Keeley Hawes took the role but Episode 5 made her reasons abundantly clear. The highlight for me was Richie's "We had so much fun" monologue. The mortgage questions scene was an eye opener.

Loved this. Emotional at the end. I loved the episode with Keely Hawes in the hospital. Very powerful.

I loved Years and Years that Russell Teeee did on BBC1 last year too.

Yeah exactly. Episode 5 is BAFTA worthy stuff from her.

I doubt my parents would watch but might be wrong

Reader, I was wrong.

Just had a really lovely conversation about the show with both my parents. My mum said she knows she didn’t react the best to my coming out, but referencing the show, she said was in her twenties during the height of this, those news reports and the vilification of gay men was all her experience of it. She said she wished the show had shown more of how society has changed and the medical advancements because she knows it’s gotten better and honestly I could cry.

We went on to talk about how this is how trans people are currently being treated and that’s why pride is important and being an ally.

Gosh, absolutely gobsmacked.

Have there been any more viewing figures released? It’s got to have been quite the hit with all the talk about it.

I would LOVE for my parents to watch it. But unfortunately those old Conservative values would come straight in during the first 15 minutes when affronted by graphic scenes of young men being fucked up the arse while giving monologues to camera and they'd likely say it was 'unnecessary'. If any generation NEEDS to see this though, it's theirs. To finally hear the truth of all the misinformation that they STILL believe about HIV and AIDS.

OMG @Beryl - I was wrong too... Mine watched it. They'd heard me and my sister talking about it in the family Whatsapp and gave it a go and mum just text me this week to say ' Just finished It's A Sin, it was very well done but so sad'. She also told me that if that had happened to me she'd have been nothing like the mum in the last episode, she'd have been more like Colin's mum. Which I'd like to think is true... but who knows!!

I just started this. Whenever NPH is on screen it just takes me out.

I can’t wait for these boys to suffer. I don’t know why I’m putting myself through it.

Edit: oh well I guess he died quickly

Well I didn’t really like this. I thought most of the characters were just flat and lots of development was pushed to the side in favor of cheesy speeches and over styled shots of them in 80s drag.

Some of it is inevitably sad but then you’d get the scene like the one with Stephen Fry or the speech about the books in the school and it just annoys me because people don’t talk or act that way.

Poor Jill had no life, like I’m sure that somewhere in the ten years she did something for herself and she didn’t spend the years living for the gays. At least she got the actual good speech with Keeley Hawes at the end.

It’s not Ryan Murphy level of bad but it’s not far off in terms of style over substance.

Apparently it was written as an 8 episode drama, but channel 4 would only commission 5 episodes. I expect a lot of the character development was lost in the edit.

You can tell a lot was cut, it was never explained why that guy was in Stephen Fry's apartment or who he was!

Apparently they were meant to follow Gill, and what her later life was like. It surely means we are likely to get some form of spin off on Gill?

I wonder if C4 are kicking themselves, or just happy that it made the impact it did with 4 episodes, I guess it doesn't matter to them with that outcome.

Was reminded of the last episode on Gogglebox last night - that's a good way to watch a show with MOST OF IT CUT but still get the GIST! :D

It’s surely bound to have a second series, right? Diminishing returns, you’d have thought. They’ll probably bring the dead gays back as ghosts visiting Jill...

Actually maybe we ALREADY KNOW? Did she carry on doing stage work? Did she marry? Did she have a family?
