Ireland 2021: Lesley Roy - Maps

Quite some turnaround from last week’s “I don’t know WHERE the winner is going to come from if Iceland don’t deliver” panic, eh?
Oh SHUSH! :tongueout: (I think I meant that Iceland feels like the only obvious winner at the minute on the back of last year, albeit there’s no song yet)

Holy SHIT at Lesley Roy turning out to be the Shangela of all this year's returning artists! This is *exactly* what all last year's prerelease hype about an 'Italia 90 moment' Ireland could get behind and be proud of should've been followed by.

You leave those time-honoured Eurovision forum traditions alone :oi:

NOT THAT BIG A DEAL but I can't stand people taking breaths in the middle of words when they sing and she's done it two years in a row now :zombie:

Actually absolutely thrilled for all involved that they've spent the last year going back to the drawing board and actually figuring out how to deliver to the hype level they first pushed out with. Can't believe our Les might actually have her fairytale ending and go to the ball/finish 8th :disco:

It does keep getting even better every time I listen to it.

Though on paper, that semi-final is kinda terrifying for a relatively small player like Ireland.

She’s lucky Israel is no longer competitive, and she better PRAY Australia sends another stinker.

Also after seeing her ‘perform’ last night I think Efendi is less of a threat than we imagined last year (yes I know YOU always hated it)

Yeah this definitely has an uphill battle but they did manage to qualify out of a stomper of a semi in 2018, and that was definitely down to the effective staging. They even have a good song this time round as well.

LOVE!
I unironically loved her 2020 entry too, but I'm glad people are behind this. Even the sneery Irish host of that clip.

I'm quite excited if I think about Ireland doing well again, it's hard not to think about all those victories as a bit of an impossibility now (I suppose in the same way as it does for the UK), it would be great for Ireland and the UK to just be contenders again.

And it also makes me happy to see returning entrants from 2020, it feels like such a shame that not all the countries are going it.

I like the mixture of countries that have retained their entrant and got them to step their pusssy up (IE: Ireland) and the countries that have stepped their pussy up by ditching last years acts (France! Cyprus!) It would be a bit boring if it was 100% returning acts this year, but having a large proportion of them come back does add an exciting dynamic.

It's alright but I'm not getting the huge fuss. I find it quite bland to be honest, although I can see it's trying to be rousing and if most people see that and love it, I hope it does well.

Despite the eternal dragging of Ireland's past success that happens in every other thread, I actually DO wish them well after years of misery so I hope she qualifies. Unless she doesn't deserve it

Also is her semi that bad, we don't even know half the songs?! Russia and Azerbaijan aren't bulletproof and there's bound to be a few no hopers.

However I guess third in the running could be iffy and based on her/the song I can still see it flopping

She really has the face of a mum that would get into a Facebook argument because another mum told HER children off in the playground.

:D

This combined with @wurst's accurate reading of that performance is clearly going to be the biggest issue. She's not Sarah McTernan levels of unlikeable but it's all a tad harsh and aggressive.

On balance she's definitely going to be dependent on staging and definitely going to be at the mercy of what the others in her semi bring.

Well there’s already The Roop, Go_A, Elena + Tix, and I’d be surprised if Russia (who are almost certainly sending Little Big again), Sweden, Azerbaijan and Malta don’t serve up the goods. The only song in the first semi that I’d see as a no hoper is Israel and there’s no way they’ll be sending the song in its current form.

I imagine Australia is going to serve a major GLOW UP as well after last year's feedback.

Fredrik Rydman will be the stage director for Lesley's ESC performance.

Some of his Melodifestivalen/ESC work:
Urban Orchestra Interval Act (ESC 2013)
Mans Zelmerlow - Heroes (MF 2015/ESC 2015)
ISA - I Will Wait (MF 2016)
Mohombi - Hello (MF 2019)
Danny - Dandi Dansa (MF 2021)
Eric Saade - Every Minute (MF 2021)

Interesting! Definitely something creative/gimmicky on the cards then

I suppose I was thinking that with 10 spots available with only 17 songs, her chances seemed possible on the basis of maybe a few like Belarus, Belgium, Croatia, Israel etc not doing so well combined with the potential of the song to stand out.

But no, actually, you're right - the odds are STACKED:

-First half
-It's not *that* good
-She doesn't initially strike me as winning people over
-Sweden, Norway, Ukraine, Cyprus, Lithuania and Russia (I'd forgotten they were likely sending Little Big again) seem certain, leaving only 4 spaces - and the likes of Romania, Azerbaijan, Belgium and Malta have the running order in their favour.

So she's going to have to rely on standing out, good staging and factors she'll have no control over...all in the hope of qualifying in about 7th place at BEST, surely

*insert that Well It's Over gif*

Im still not ready to say anything positive about Ireland

I really enjoy this when I'm listening to it, but I'm still having a little trouble making the hook stick in my head...

Was that her 2020 position? I know they're reusing the semi allocations but I assume they'd create a new running order based on this year's songs.

Oh I've no idea, I just assumed they were.

If they're changing it, then...scrap (some) of what I said!

Although :D if she then draws second (with a small side of :( )

Okay I'm :manson:ing myself now, of course the running order isn't out until all the songs are released. I should have realised it was alphabetical!

But she's still drawn in the first half so it doesn't change things massively
