United Kingdom 2021: James Newman - Embers

Oh I like this, best UK entry in ages.

In a normal year I'd see this landing 11th, but I feel that there are too many bangers and it's going to get a bit lost in the crowd this year.

HerSerene said it sounds like male Jess Glynn, which may be true but I like it. It’s going to be all about the staging with this one.

I don’t know if that’s necessarily true you know, because it does occupy a space that none of the other uptempos really do.

It’s probably prime contender to open the final as things stand so that won’t help it competitively.

I agree that it's a different type of banger - the nearest thing to it is probably Germany, which isn't really anything like it at all. I think there's definitely room for this to shine at the final, but your frighteningly plausible scenario means I'm now praying for a second half draw.

Hmmmmmm. Sheena was on the money with “naff” I feel. There’s something a bit twee/half-cooked about it. Not sure it’s gonna get you back on the left hand side, my loves.

Way better than our usual standard. Not certain he's the right person to sing it, but if he wrote it I guess it's his prerogative.

I'd like them to beef up the production on it, which we've plenty of time to do, but otherwise I really am excited about this.

Despite what a CERTAIN Master of Ceremonies at the Pop Toilet musical revue might have said in this thread...

I love how it actually sounds like something that could be a UK chart hit (at least in the early-mid 2010s, I don't follow the charts anymore) and that it doesn't sound like a song where the purpose is that it's written for Eurovision.

It's very instant, very catchy and easy to dance to and whilst I am worried that it could get lost amongst all the other bangers, I feel like the female uptempo market is quite crowded (Cyprus, Moldova, San Marino, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, probably Azerbaijan) but maybe there's a place for this when the only other men with a bit of life to turn to are...Germany and Czech Republic?

I won't get my hopes up too high but bravo James on what is a very clear glow-up from last year!

Much better than last year’s entry, it sounds like a new Sigala single so at least it is CURRENT.

I do find it quite cheap but I feel like that’s easier to get away with it in a banger as opposed to a ballad. I like it, it stands out and I think a lot depends on staging, who the other qualifiers are, and it’s running order.

To be fair Belgium managed a top ten finish opening one of the best ever finals with a Sax rip off so it might not be a poisoned chalice.

Actually Lucie was genuinely good and I know we have Molly fans here so I’d not like to upset them :tongueout:

I revisited Scooch the other day and I cannot even explain what it did to me aside from the words FLESH and CRAWLING coming to mind, as well as PROFOUND AND ENDURING HORROR

I think it's pretty good - probably not the sort of thing I'd choose to listen to much myself (unlike My Last Breath), but it's FUN and upbeat and could stand out.

We’ve not finished 23rd since.. *checks Wikipedia*.. erm, ever. That’d be a nice change :disco:

I'm not interested in a UK entry unless it's aiming for top 10, which this clearly is not.

Oh God it's so utterly basic. It brings me to mind of ANDY ABRAHAMS.

Having read the comments before I listened to the song I am a bit disappointed. I am not keen at all. :(

Obviously we don't know anything about the staging etc, but I reckon a nice respectable mid-teens result is extremely possible for this and would probably be seen as a big success.
Actually I'll go out on a limb and predict 16th - better than Molly, worse than Lucie.

I mean, this basically. I'm fed up of people saying "we're moving slowly in the right direction"... GET THERE FASTER.

Also any song that people predict could be a respectable mid-table finisher always runs the risk of being an accidental last place finisher by very virtue of their middling-ness.
