After my little faux pas about Le figaro this morning (sorry @Dark Carnival), I wondered what people considered to be the best news sources from the around world (non-UK)?

It's interesting to read a local take on international events as they happen, but then you risk getting a view from an anti-vaxxer etc...

Anything without a paywall is a PLUS!

The only international publication i read is Granma (the official newspaper of the communist party of Cuba).

It is absolutely not a credible news source, but it is sometimes amusing and improves my Spanish.

In France, I read Le Monde for something pretty balanced (very very slightly lefty) and Libération for something UNAPOLOGETICALLY lefty :emoji_fist:

Le Figaro was normally my go to for news, i know it is centre right but I never got Mail/express vibes...
Le Monde was always just DULL AS .

is Libération an acceptable source @Dark Carnival ?

Oh honey no, Le Figaro is as right wing as you can get, if you go any further right it's fucking Valeurs Acutelles (actual Front National propaganda)... A lot of people read Le figaro in France but that's because France is a right wing country :manson:

Libération is acceptable for anyone left of (and including) le Parti Socialiste. Though the friend I'm with right now just called Libération sissy lefties and said that an actual lefty news outlet is Médiapart :emoji_fist: :D

Reuters, the Associated Press and PBS are unbeatable. Just no nonsense unembellished news, and among the highest rated in the world for accuracy and non-bias.

The Economist and CBS are also good choices, slightly Right and Left leaning respectively.

I guess the key is to never settle for one source, but to read from multiple different ones.

If you want to know the bias of a news website I found this the other day: https://ground.news/

I found our little outlet on there and we're classed as 100% left, which made me smile.

This website is, like, so excellent. That Firefox Add-On is such a great educational tool.

They even have a "Blindspot" section, labelled "For the Left" and "For the Right" :D

I think maybe the UK public are a bit damaged because of their demonic right wing media. (Seeing as Alex is comparing Le Figaro to STOP FUCKING HATE). Some of the content in those British tabloids would only make it in far right web ”news” sites here.

"For the Right"

"Massage Parlor Massacres Suspect Said He Loved Guns & God"

:D Mary Magdalene FUMING from heaven.

Because of the things I read I keep getting news recommendations for Huffpost and Rolling Stone :side-eye: and even though I agree with everything they have to say I’m getting a bit fed up of being fed lefty bias. Sometimes I just want to read the news and make my own mind up.

I’m becoming less and less attached to news outlets. I haven’t bought or read a newspaper regularly in years. I’ve removed all the subscriptions from social media.

I get most of my news from the BBC now.

Oh definitely, nothing as notorious as the the Mail is as big here.

For me it’s SVT (Swedish BBC), BBC, and our two major newspapers (that get much of their international news through Reuters, AP etc).

I love me some New Yorker, but really don’t have the attention span to read some of their interesting/amazing yet superlong articles.

I used to read The Economist, but I grew tired of it and find it a bit basic.

I still mostly read The Guardian but I'm very much aware it has problems. The Terfyness has really shone through in recent years and I won't read anything anymore by the awful Hadley Freeman. (They seem to have cut Suzanne Moore loose, thank God).

I think it's really important to take any commercial media with a pinch of salt. There's as much ridiculously biased/bad faith reporting from the left as there is from the right, albiet generally not *quite* as hateful.

not just the Fail but the wealth of choice available. If you’re still feeling middle class but a bit too angry and racist for The Fail’s attempts at veiled bigotry, then the Express’s unreserved and brazen dirge is more up your street. Of course if you want your racism and sexism and homophobia served up with some
boobs, playground language and more pictures for the academically challenged, the S*n is still incredibly popular (free lager for a year !!!!!11!!! Offer inside now!!!!1!1!!). And if you like your racism more intellectual and opinions based somewhere in the 14th Century, the Telegraph has you covered.

choices choices!

it’s the clickbaity ness of The Guardian these days that riles me. It’s like they’ve hired a load of Fail writers and asked them to do the same job but with reverse politics

I haven’t tried those. It’s the op eds that dominate their social media posts. It’s odd really; because the majority of people would read the op ed titles as representing the Guardian, but the headlines are designed to force a reaction so are often counter to the Guardian’s left lean. So the comments are just full of people saying The Guardian has lost its way, and then people arguing with those people. It’s horrendous.

Nowadays with the podcast market growing rapidly, I find most of news and political debates through this medium. It’s a lot easier to access high quality content (especially when different sides are invited to debate a certain issue) instead of scrolling through a lot of articles online.

Any recommendation? I've REALLY struggled to get onto the Podcast bandwagon. I don't know how to get into them.

So far I’m drowning in Swedish news podcasts, so the only international one I listen to sometimes is Politico’s EU Confidential podcast.

I’d love to listen to something American or British, especially if they focus more on geopolitics and realpolitik.

This is why I miss driving. It was the perfect way to get into these podcasts.

As @VoR says, I think one should take all news sources with a pinch of salt. I read the Guardian, NYT, OpenDemocracy, whatever else the eco-system throws up, but I do find that I'm not interested in most opinion pieces, and I see that even 'objective' reporting has a blind spot. The media's continued fascination with fascists and problematic framing of social justice issues have made that clear.
