I found this one both very slow and quite BIZARRE in tone. It was as though it was judging the main character for not actively wanting to be deaf. I kept waiting for it to turn and the group to be exposed as some kind of Midsommar-style cult, but I think we were supposed to admire them?

Riz Ahmed gives a great perfomance and the sound design was very impressive, but ultimately it was just too slow, meandering and, honestly, WEIRD to land for me.

I watched this last night. Loved all the performances and it’s obviously a good pick for Best Sound. I really think this would have been better in a cinema rather than on my sofa with distracting sounds from outside ruining it.

It did strike me that that might be why I'm finding this year's Oscar season such a slog. I'm just never as engaged when I'm sitting on my sofa occasionally flicking through my phone (which happened a LOT during this one, but then nothing was happening for, like, an hour!)

It was alright. I agree about the cinema thing. Also some of the logic of how he got the operation without fully understanding what he will get made it hard for me to follow.

Same. I think it's why I tend to stick to light comedy films as my first pick on streaming services. My attention span is terrible so I truly need the cinema to appreciate a good drama and especially any foreign language film.

Foreign movies are better for me because I have to focus on the subtitles so I can’t be distracted.

I'm a massive Riz Ahmed fan and his performance is sublime. The movie is good, A very slow burner but beautifully written. I'd love to see it in the cinema though when they finally reopen.
