Scottish politics thread (including 2021 Holyrood elections, potential IndyRef2, and SNP leadership contest)

Also, another defection:

And of course:
She is also the founder of the SNP Women’s Pledge group, which opposes aspects of the Scottish Government’s planned reforms of the Gender Recognition Act.

Does this not just split the pro-independence vote on the list making it more likely for a Yoon to slip through?
Alas, no. Cos the SNP get very few list seats because they completely sweep the constituencies, they basically only get list seats in Southern Scotland (three there, another one in Highlands and Islands). As such, the c. 40% of the list vote the SNP get is usually wasted, so the seats pretty much all go to the Greens/unionist parties. The unionist parties are the ones who'll be getting elbowed out of the way the most by this (on the presumption people likely to be voting Alba on the list probably weren't going to be voting Green, which is a bit of a presumption but I imagine is the case for the majority of them).

I understand the Scottish system (and is my favourite current UK voting system), but it's tricky to just dive into.

How many constituency seats are you imagining the SNP will lose in Highlands and Islands? :basil:
They got three list seats in 2011! It isn't impossible (though improbable).

And Kate Forbes is second on the list so, realistically, SNP need two to get Tom in.

I'd absolutely LOVE it if it was UK wide. It's the perfect mix of fair results and understandable enough to actually still understand the permutations easily if things shift a bit between the parties (FUCK YOU STV)

I'll await highlights. Hoping they get argumentative and end up having a bagpipe off. I presume that and glassing each other, is how disputes get settled in Scotland.

What a dismal stage. Like an early 90s Channel 4 serious debate show.

She's Canadian, and is reminding me of SOMEONE from a 90s US sitcom and it's driving me mad that I can't put my finger on it.

She means well but I'm not sure she's coming across particularly well - I think Patrick Harvie would have been a better choice.

Sarah Smith was giving me Lisa Scott-Lee's nan talking to Michelle Heaton there...

"Oh hello Anas! Haven't heard much from YOU lately!"

I'd quite like this explained too. Do they actually sit in the Scottish Parliament?
Yeah. They're all equal, just elected in a much fairer way that provides local representation and reasonably fair overall representation.

Douglas Ross's posture and arm placement makes me think of the Dungeon Master:

So the Scottish Parliament is doubly big? With some FPTP MPs and some List MPs? Is there a sort of unwritten hierarchy between them?

I don't think it's any bigger than it needs to be. Re the hierarchy, pass.
