Loyalists really fucking kicking off in Northern Ireland again :o

Mixture of the Brexit Northern Irish protocol putting a sea border between NI and GB, anger that a number of Sinn Fein figures (including the co-First Minister Michelle O'Neil) got 'let off' in loyalist eyes by the Northern Irish police service over breaking rona lockdown at a prominent republican's funeral last summer, and general lockdown fatigue really railing things up, and Arlene's basically lost control. Not really many voices in the DUP establishment currently who can call working class loyalists/the likes of the UDA to heel in the way the other side can, so this could well get worse and rumble on for a while.

Probably should apologise to Commotion.

Although to be fair this doesn't (yet) seem quite the scale of the Troubles. Fingers crossed it doesn't get there.

Isn't there some kind of rioting every so often in NI? Is this exceptional in some way?

It's depressing depressing depressing and it isn't helped when this is the immediate reaction of the first minister:

"The real law breakers". I mean -

NI has come such a long way in most regards and it's painful to watch the same dinosaurs and the same idiots holding us back.

This is kind of on a par with 2012-2015, albeit there's not really any obvious solution in sight for how you'd end this one (that the current UK government is willing to do at least) so it's likely to just keep getting worse from this point and escalating.

Great! I love nostalgia.

I know the attitude in the newsrooms here will probably be on similar "aren't they always rioting about something or the other over there?" lines, but it really is quite depressing that this is only getting the barest snippet of attention on things like the News At Ten. It's literally happening in this country!

Maybe I'm just OLD but this seems like relative child's play when compared with my, admittedly dated, recollections of NI.

Go back 20 plus years this would seem like a QUIET NIGHT for NI.

To be fair most of the major UK newsrooms are pretty England-centric in their reporting. Very often what happens in the other nations is shunted to a brief 30 second snippet at the end.

“Get The Beers In” is better but still not ideal
