Girl Like Me is a cute basic bop, but better suited to soundtrack H&M changing rooms than my Shakira top 10 11.

Don't Wait Up however is the song I've been waiting for Shakira to create her ENTIRE CAREER!
Those FABULOUS organ stabs are giving me mid-90s house music falling into a k hole and I cannot get ENOUGH! :disco:

I read a quote today about how she literally learned English to a fluent level so she could write the same quality lyrics as her Spanish before making Laundry Service.

then I listened to Don't Wait Up with its fucking tragic excuse for a middle 8 (first I kiss you, then I get mad at you - barf) and wondered what the fuck happened to this woman.

did she literally just become happy and rich and have nothing left to write about? how did she go from She Wolf to Shakira. to this?

it's sad, but on the other side of the coin I've spent a lot of time with Fijacion Oral Vol 1 as well as OFV2, She Wolf, Sale El Sol and Laundry Service (WHAT AN ALBUM!) and been happily reminded that she was fucking incredible for a long time. a top 20 SOON THIS WAY COMES.

I believe you speak some Spanish so you may want to check out her pre-Laundry Service stuff as it's GORGEOUS: Antología, Estoy Aquí, Moscas en la casa, Inevitable, Pies Descalzos etc.

For a second in the 90s she nearly became a Colombian Alanís.

This is growing on me a little after a few listens

I've been slowly dipping my toes in the first two records and loving it! she has so much material. I really do need to go full DEEP DIVE.

Do you have her MTV Unplugged album in your country's Spotify? Go for that one, it's a RIDE.

Eyes Like Yours would have made the most AMAZING Eurovision entry for any of Turkey/Azerbeijan/Armenia.
NOT SURE that's what she was aiming for :D but it's a hard fact to deny :disco:

Love love love Ojos Así (the English version has nothing on the original). It might also be the only time she actually claimed her Lebanese heritage (other than that other time she went to Lebanon to claim her Lebanese heritage, literally - a piece of land that belonged to her Lebanese grandparents :eyes: )

Is this the same trip?

This era is just a flop on arrival then? :side-eye: Judging by her socials, she or her team just don't give a fuck this around.

is it time already to whip out the guitar and then swiftly release a follow up single (a BALLARD naturally, co-written with a cis-man songwriter) featuring heartfelt lyrics sprinkled with Shakira-esque quirky references to God, humans, Earth, and comparing falling in love to eating ice cream?
