Dieter Brummer DEAD

I didn’t recognise the name, but then I Googled him.

Media reports hinting at suicide, aged 45.

:o That's so sad.

I think I was quite obsessed with his chest as a baby gay.

Shane and Angel 4 EVA (didn't he and Melissa George hate each other?)

He wasn’t my Summer Bay hunk of choice but was clearly brought in as their riposte to Jason Donovan. Sad news indeed.

Oh god... this makes me really sad.

On a related note... why is it if someone is killed or dies from illness news reports say so, but if someone takes their own life there's this code of 'his death is not being treated as suspicious'. There is this massive taboo over suicide and it needs to stop and we need to talk about it. :(

This gives some of the reasoning:

“The risk of suicide contagion increases significantly following stories that feature the suicide or attempted suicide of a high-profile person.

A summary of the research evidence, published in 2020, has shown that media reporting about celebrity suicides is associated with a 13% increase in suicides over the following 1-2 months.”

Wow... well that is interesting and I stand corrected then. How awful. :( But I wonder what the long term implications are for hushing up suicide and not talking about it, if the short term impact is that.

It always amused me that at school we had PSE (personal social education) and I used to sit there on my own in silence for an hour. Schools have a wonderful opportunity to spread the message of including everyone, etc.

I have read a little on Dieter and I'm surprised his career wasn't more consistent. Perhaps this could have been a factor, especially as it seemed at times he wanted left alone when the "where are they now?" articles featured him.

saddened by this. He was definitely one of the pin ups growing up for the school girls

I would imagine that the police would want to avoid giving out a potentially false cause of death until they were 100% sure, no? Just because something looks like a suicide, they’d need to rule out any other possibilities before making a definitive proclamation.

They say 'not suspicious circumstances' though which is them telling us it's not a murder. If it were an accident they would always tell us straight away too. It's almost always media code for suicide.

Well it could also mean natural causes or an accident. This early on they cannot always know. But it isn't 'media code' at all, is it? The media are only reporting what the police at that stage have declared.

I suppose at that point all they can declare is that they are satisfied nobody else is involved, and therefore it isn't suspicious.

Just went back to see the original Stephen Gately reports to see if there was any difference and the BBC said at the time:

“Spanish police said there were no signs of suspicious circumstances, but the cause of death is not yet known.”

Well yes - quite apart from what Madison has posted (which clearly is a hugely compelling reason in its own right), at this stage it just isn't known. Even if it is very likely to be suicide, it would be pretty irresponsible to declare it as such without further investigation, which will of course be ongoing anyway.

It's always 'not thought to be suspicious' rather than 'not suspicious', as well, isn't it?

Which yes, can usually be implied to be suicide when it's somebody young, but leaves open the possibility for other outcomes.
