The program will consist of five "heats" of 10 states each competing for four spots that will advance to the next round. The 20 remaining states will compete in two semifinals, with five states in each semifinal qualifying for the Grand Finals. The 10 finalists will battle for the American Song Contest trophy.

The format has since been expanded to include all 50 states, five U.S. territories, and Washington, D.C., the national capital and a federal district of the United States. The participating territories are American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each representative will perform an original song in a live television program broadcast across the country. Acts can consist of solo artists, duos, bands or a DJ. The winning act will be determined through fan votes and "a jury of music industry professionals," earning the title of Best Original Song

This is set to air in Spring 2022. Flo Rida has expressed an interest to represent Florida. What do we predict?

The appear to be accidentally ripping off Melodifestivalen rather than Eurovision here.

If I understand well, a viewer that has been watching it from the beginning will have seen the songs and full performances of the final at least twice already? Before the final?

It’s no accident! It’s Christer Bjorkman, who has intentionally done a mix between Melfest and Eurovision.

Yeah, I'm not sure this will make for THRILLING TV for the masses.

There is a 90% chance that whatever artist I like best turns out to be a racist, so I won't get my hopes up too much

I suspect the biggest problem with this is that it's going to turn out to be just another TV series rather than a one-off event which you get all your mates round to watch whilst drinking heavily.

Will it even be live? Or is it just going to be another edited chopped together Idol under another name?

Since it’s states competing, who don’t have individual broadcasters, there’s a centralised submissions process for this so I’m sure Christer will relish pulling all the strings there.

Given how TRIBAL Americans are I can see this doing well. I may like this because the music is bound to suit me so much more than Eurovision

I think that I can see this succeeding

*it’s patriotic
*might be good distraction from everything else
*the ‘political’ voting will make great talking points
*famous acts will likely enter which will cause a buzz
*lots of potential for outrage at the result/how good or bad the songs are

I see this (1) doing well; (2) a now post-X Factor ITV buying the format for the UK and nailing it (Masked Singer style); (3) and the UK ending up with the perfect Eurovision selection formula...on the wrong network.

Oh this will totally end up being a blue state/red state thing

Weird that they still haven’t said how entries will be chosen (unless I’ve missed it). I guess the winner will get an interview at ESC like the JESC winner.

Looking forward to the entries from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands :disco:

I think applications opened a while ago on some centralised submission website so it’s actually the show production team choosing who represents each state.
