Tokyo 2020 - Day 7 (Fri 30 July)

How many gold are we expected to win overall?

I was expecting our medal haul to be lower than London or Rio but 6 gold feels way off the pace of the other top nations.

The rowing was a disappointment and athletics may not bring in the medals that we’ve seen in the past. We’ll be reliant on the track cycling I guess.

This random guy on Twitter who keeps producing quality analysis predicts GB on course for 15-20 gold:

Likely fourth on the medal table, behind USA, China and Japan, but possibly second in terms of total medals won.

I don't think we set a target for gold medals this time, but we were targeting between 45-70 medals total and we'll make the lower end of that easily. Really the last couple of games have spoiled us as we shouldn't be getting anywhere near the likes of China and Russia in the medal table. France and Germany are the countries that we 'should' be competing with and they've both only got three gold medals each so far. I think fifth or sixth overall in the medals table, behind the US, China, Russia, Japan and maybe Australia would still be an unambiguous success.

Japan are going to run out of Judo events to get gold in after tonight, hope they’ve got something else in the bag!
They’re one away from their all-time best gold haul already though :disco:

They got four golds in the women's wrestling in 2016, so you'd assume they'll be expecting some from there. I would also assume that they will be looking for plenty of karate medals, given that they insisted on it being a part of the games.

There's quite a few coming in the boxing. A number of Brits are in the semi finals.

Even if he is a bit scummy, it's quite satisfying to see Alex Zverev taking down Novak.

God, this Zverev-Djokovic match is my tennis nightmare. Literally don't want either to win but the idea of Zverev being an Olympic Champion is truly nauseating.

Zverev-Djokovic is very much the second match of the week (after Zverev-Basilashvili) where I really want them both to lose and, preferably, to fall down a big hole.

Djokovic is an irritant who holds many views that I don't agree with. But at least he doesn't smirk in the face of serious domestic violence accusations.

Why do you dislike Novak bebs? I've been off him ever since he did those weird 'oh I'm sick' falls in a couple of semis and finals and then went on to win them.

Let’s hope it’s silver for one and 4th place for the other.

We live in hope but the winner is favourite to win gold and the loser is VERY likely to get bronze against PCB.

Karen Khachanov prayer circle active.

Sports is one thing but it's peddling pseudo-science, mystic energy water and other bullshit in the middle of the pandemic that's really left a sour note. His statements are always dangerously close to anti-vaxx.

There are often times where I guess he has good intentions but the road to hell is paved with exactly that.

Lost Hemsworth-Brother Karen ❤️

Possible all Russian mixed doubles final too if Novak and Nina lose their semi.

A year ago who would have predicted the rise of Aslan Karatsev?

I need Elena Vesnina to win more medals. Absolutely icon that woman.

Things are looking good for GB in the Lady Football and the Lady Rugby.
No doubt they’ll try and defend the 2-1 lead for the next eighteen minutes :eyes:

Dina Asher-Smith looking promising for a medal too.

Felt bad for Lawrence Okoye in the discus, three no throws, especially after how disappointing his London 2012 campaign was.

I switched to athletics (thanks BBC).

First time I’ve ever seen a mixed gender relay - fascinating watching seven men chase down one woman in the last leg.

Saved. Probably for the best given that this team's record of defending a lead for exactly 18 minutes is less than flawless.
