Saint Etienne - I've Been Trying To Tell You

Wow, that's a (relatively) impressive uplift for 8 tracks of noodling vs an album featuring actual (if largely very boring) songs.

Totally down to the Imbruglia sample i’m sure.

The combined power of Imbruglia, Honeyz and Samantha Mumba's hardcore fanbases must surely be good for at least one of those additional sales.

Was this one on more formats? For an act like them (well, most heritage acts), isn't it largely the same group of people buying each album?

Yeah, definitely more formats but also I do think this has more exposure. How much that equates to I don’t know, but, still, very happy with the result even if it will presumably disappear out the chart next week.

It's also been better received than Home Counties which was, lets face it, overlong and undercooked.

Well this is EASILY my favourite Saint Etienne album in quite some moons and also we have this on that Rough Trade bonus CD

There are links to some nice interviews with Bob and Sarah in the relevant thread on (:D) Steve Hoffman Music Forums which may or may not have already been posted here but I’m far too tired to be copying and pasting at this time of life :disco:

I bought the CD/DVD from Rough Trade thinking I would get the bonus CD but it didn't appear so I am assuming you only got it if you bought the CD version. Their listings aren't always very clear regarding bonuses. I did get Bob's Choctaw Ridge compilation in the same order which is rather good.

I've quite enjoyed the album on the couple of listens I have given it so far but expect in time I'll be more likely to go back to a few individual songs from the very flabby Home Counties. Words and Music is right up there with their best I think.

Yeah, I think it only comes with the single CD and vinyl. Home Counties landed at exactly the wrong time, what with Brexit horrors going on. I’d rather have had songs about Luxembourg instead and I only really like Whyteleafe anyway. Very much agreed on the Words And Music front! :disco:

The only album I don’t really like at all is Good Humor, mainly because of that dreadful (intentionally) boxy production sound rather than the songs themselves. Mr Donut is always good for a giggle

Home Counties remains my least favourite Saint Etienne album, so it was pretty sure that this would be a step up, but I’m absolutely loving it still a week on.

Words and Music is right up there for me with their absolute best. Nothing will ever top Good Humor for me, I can’t imagine, but it comes so close. I wish they would go back to that dance-pop sound again.

Home Counties could have been improved somewhat with a good culling and by adding on London Like a Distant Sun, but it would still be down at the bottom of the pile. Then they came out with Camel Coat not that long afterwards which I loved.

I loved the whole Surrey EPs material. Camel Coat is fantastic.

I really do think the concept weighed them down for once on Home Counties. It was too British but in an overcast 70s summer kinda way…

No mention of the new Xmas EP?

It is fine, and I am very aware of my more basic pop verse-chorus-verse-chorus preferences, but I do hope this a final bow on this particular St Et era and they move on now.

I didn’t realise it was out- I was waiting on the physical! Bad fan!

Love Her Winter Coat, though.

No Xmas/freebies at the gig on Friday

The new stuff didn’t really come over well in the set either (mind you, the sound was shocking for most of it)

Ah contraire. I thought Penlop sounded absolutely fantastic and went down really well at both my gigs.

And there won’t be a freebie cause they’re selling all the new stuff for charideeee.

Her Winter Coat shouldn’t be done live though- that didn’t work at all.
