Stabbed in the neck and airlifted to hospital.

That's awful. I hope he pulls through. As far as the last time I read about it, he was still carrying security with him.

This perhaps isn't quite the right thread but Midnight Children is one of the most incredible novels I've read in my life.

I encourage everyone to read it, not having read much of him prior, I thought it would be a stuffy, dense intellectual book but it's one of the most beautiful stories ever. MAGICAL.

Horrible. They said on the news that there weren't really any security checks at this event.

A witness said that audience members were the first to intervene before the police arrived.

Never read any of his works, but I was hyper-aware of The Satanic Verses furore back in the day.

Ive seen a few people say this today

I must admit I’ve never had success with his books. Both Midnights Children and Satanic Verses are on my shelves. But both have been attempted and abandoned several times

Mopsty book clubbers to weigh
In please

Quite tempted to stick a toe in ‘Quichotte’

Off ventilator and able to talk now.

This reminds me of when Naguib Mahfouz was stabbed - also in the neck, leaving him permanently unable to write.

His assailant wasn't even born when The Satanic Verses came out. Bizarre.

Perhaps Salman pushed in front of him in the hotel buffet queue, and we're all just jumping to conclusions re: the fatwa
I'm picturing some sort of Curb Your Enthusiasm-style minor disagreement spiralling into attempted murder :(

Imagine stabbing Salman Rushdie 15 times and STILL not getting the cash prize.
