Next Tory leader/ UK Prime Minister (2022)

Least disgusting?

I’m just hoping that they’re just shouting all this bollocks into the void hoping to win, but when they get to it they’ll be even more toothless than Terri-May

I don’t know much about Sunak but surely anything is better than Truss? I don’t understand how she’s leading. From (the admittedly little of) what I’ve seen/heard of her she seems like a hybrid of Boris and Theresa.

That leak actually gives me comfort there might be some method to her madness.

Depends on which two countries you compare of course but there's no reason why the UK couldn't have achieved a labour productivity on par with Germany.

Rishi has been lurching closer to the far-right in a desperate attempt to beat Liz and is also far more competent and evil, and a rabid free market capitalist even by Tory standards, and I’m sure will be happy to let people DIE for the sin of not having a job at Goldman Sachs.

Which is why it’s strange that he’s not leading, because isn’t this everything what the party members would want?

Have you been paying any attention for the past decade babe? Bigoted old white English gammons would vote for concentration camps and full-blown genocide if they could.

His tax avoidance issues also sunk his campaign before it even began. He has/had American citizenship and his wife was a non-dom, so is also widely seen to not be loyal to Britain, and his vast wealth is also probably off-putting from an electoral point of view.

I think Sunak is both too close to the least popular elements of Boris’ leadership, and also percieved as a traitor who was instrumental in bringing him down. So he’s between a rock and a hard place with the membership.

Plus he’s brown, obviously.

We need to normalise that "the UK has an extremist far-right government" in the eyes of confused Europeans. It's basically Russia with worse weather.

I get that, but my point is that Sunak seems to be more the type that the party members of a conservative party would go for instead of Truss.

They aren't really conservatives any more. They are far right Nationalists and perceived loyalty to their idea of British values is all that a disturbingly high proportion of the party members care about.

The people voting in this are a tiny, tiny group of paid members of the Tory party that isn't even representative of Conservative voters, let alone the general populace. It's basically just old, reactionary, mostly white men who live in one corner of England.

This on it's own is a sensible statement.

But the reason is decades of underinvestment, underskilling, understaffing and a shareholder-first profit mentality which the Conversative party have presided over and oft encouraged.

It is NOT due to the "graft" of the labour who are in many areas being run to the bone.

Absolutely - the higher productivity in London is in many ways a consequence of international institutions, such as in finance, which is extremely productive, and has then rubbed off (for want of a better term) on British institutions in those same industries.

It's all about a lack of investment which is astonishing when we considered many of world's best research institutions are right here in the UK.

Investment and skilled labour is important but so is work culture.

There's a culture in Germany where people work more efficiently and takes shorter breaks with less random chit chat but then gets to have shorter work days and less interference from work when they're off.

Then there's the question of who's to blame for how things work in Britain :eyes:

We should not underestimate the detriment of 'presenteeism' either. The pandemic has done a lot to push back but it still has its detractors and has, inexplicably, become another utterly tiresome front in the culture war (see also, woke weather).

Much of this is driven by a huge body of middle management - people with a vested interest in bums on seats and faces at screens - it doesn't make for a nimble economy and it is horribly patrician (which the Tories naturally lean in to due to their innate sympathy with management class). The consequence is an economy where distrust is endemic - workers and managers are not seen as stakeholders with the closely aligned interests. No economy or labour market is perfect, but it seems particularly hamstrung in the UK.

Nice to see Useless and Incompetent getting close to top billing.

I am sceptical right now that she is going to get any honeymoon whatsoever.

And her comments about Macron were lamentable - it’s the sort of thing a French opposition leader can say - not the likely next PM of a neighbour and ally. She is in over her head.

Does she trip into power on the 5th?

We should do a charity run on that day and donate to something she's against.
