On first listens it's better than Positions and some other album from ages ago (Yours Truly?) though it doesn't come close to thank u, next😮‍💨

Highlights:

supernatural
true story
the boy is mine
imperfect for you

The rest needs to grow or be forgotten forever.

I like overall LO-FI vibe✨ aesthetic the album goes for but my God, aren't some of the lyrics sad though?? Is she ok? Except for bye which could have been written by Jojo Ziwa.

it's certainly a very good r&b album I'll give her that, and apparently, she was the sole lyrics writer this time around. omg her Impossible Princess :disco:
I don't find it r&b at all, the tempo is mid but I think it's a pop album all the way. if anything I missed one smoky r&b moment like Off the table from positions, but overall I'm glad she's back in her pop bag. the introspective vibe suits her, she's a good lyricist. the vocals are so light, her voice just glides, and like Mariah she understands the value of holding back.

Vocally she is definitely holding back this time around but I agree it WORKS. Her voice when used softly is so light and airy it’s almost transparent.

I think it’s a good album! I’m surprised! I’ll come back to confirm my highlights but as a collection I’m pleasantly surprised.

Am I blown away? No, but Ariana Grande simply just doesn’t move me like that. It’s a step in the right direction 👏

"We Can't Be Friends" was MID until the :disco:tastic "wait for your love" refrain revealed itself.

I'm liking this album. It tails off a bit at the end but as someone who usually admires rather than fully enjoys her voice I agree it works well here.

bye has a lovely light disco feel but supernatural and true story stand out. She sounds great on we can't be friends and it is a nice toe dipping in sparkly electropop moment.

she's doing We can't be friends and Imperfect for you on SNL tonight

I don't find it r&b at all, the tempo is mid but I think it's a pop album all the way. if anything I missed one smoky r&b moment like Off the table from positions, but overall I'm glad she's back in her pop bag. the introspective vibe suits her, she's a good lyricist. the vocals are so light, her voice just glides, and like Mariah she understands the value of holding back.

Arguing about whether things are r'n'b or pop is so pointless these days - the two genres are almost interchangeable and usually the decision of which one it fits into comes down to with the public ridiculously seems to come down to the ethnicity of the singer.

But I'll weigh in anyway - the beats are very r'n'b, the melodies are quite pop.

Oh and I think this album is fantastic. She's really got the balance right on some actual choons while appealing to a more modern audience.

friends +3 spots to #2 on global Spotify today. #7 UK so she should be looking at a top 5 new entry next fri.

I liked "yes and" enough but this is GOOD across the board, isn't it? And she's found a nice vocal mix again.

We Can't Be Friends is my favourite by a county mile, predictably but the rest hangs together well, too.

Her voice on that 'Imperfect for You' performance :disco:

Ready for a rate minus the interludes!

09 bye
08 don't wanna break up again
10 eternal sunshine
07 supernatural
06 true story
07 the boy is mine
09 yes, and?
09 we can't be friends
06 i wish i hated you
07 imperfect for you
08 ordinary things

"true story" feels a bit out of place here. feels like something that would be on sweetener or something.

the title track really is that girl. the falsetto chorus is everything

i showed you all my demons
all my lies...
yet you play me like atari
now it's like i'm looking in the mirror
hope you feel alright when you're in her
i found a good boy
and he's on my side
you're just my eternal sunshine, sunshine

She released a "slightly deluxe" edition overnight (might be physical only, I see it just listed under merch for now on Spotify).

Projected to do on par with positions, in the US, as of yesterday. Hopefully it trends up with the SNL perf, and soft 2nd day drop.

NEW RELEASE: ARI SHINES BRIGHT

Republic's Ariana Grande will debut at #1 on next week's HITS Top 50, as eternal sunshine is on pace for an opening in the range of 165k-185k, good enough for the biggest bow of 2024.

This sets up eternal sunshine to meet or exceed the first week activity of Grande’s previous album, Positions, which opened with 174k in 2020. On Saturday morning, Spotify confirmed that eternal sunshine earned the most single-day streams for an album in 2024 in its opening day. Grande's set will also give House Lipman a third consecutive week at #1. Monte plans to celebrate with a trip to Montauk.

A wildcard this week is Ye & Ty Dolla $ign's Vultures II, originally slated to arrive on 3/8. Judging by the sloppy roll out of Vultures 1, who knows when part two could drop?

Stay tuned for projections later in the week for new titles from Epic's Judas Priest and Dirty Hit's Bleachers.

I’m enjoying this album, it’s a solid piece of work. There’s nothing that I particularly love or would rush to as a standalone track but it’s definitely a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

The Troye version of supernatural is great. Does he say "You said you wanted an anon meet - boy you read my mind"? :ken:

Her best album in ages and We Can’t Be Friends is an early contender for a top 5 song of the year :disco:
