Beyoncé - act ii: COWBOY CARTER

Dereon Jeans DEAD? It's a bit 2am for a proper listen, but Spaghetti was a sonic stand out. Levii's is a nice casual fit too.

The huns at her new tour who still think Beyoncé’s music starts with Crazy in Love and ends with Halo are going to be even more bored than they were at Renaissance.

AMERICAN REQUIEUM

this moment of hot psychedelic leaning rock with its big wagon of a chorus is almost giving me CRUEL WORLD as album openers go. a bit of a thrill! destroys I'M THAT GIRL as openers go.

There's a lot I'm really enjoying here on this exceptionally long album.

BLACKBIIRD

not sure I know the original by Ringo and friends but this is gorgeous and passes by in a breeze. 8

16 CARRIAGES

it had such an end of album, winding up feel to me. maybe on a simpler album it would came late. but this really works right at the beginning. love the FRESH AIR ENERGY that permeates this song, it's a beaut.

8.5

PROTECTOR

very cute and some lush vocals but feels a bit for the straights. 7.5

It really takes some hubris to think you can just rewrite Jolene with the same tune but new, considerably worse lyrics. :basil:

I was pondering what her next genre will be. I'm hoping for some new age/ gregorian chant after listening to Daughter. Enya feat. please.

TEXAS HOLD EM
I've never enjoyed this as much as I did today. yes it's for the locals but her vocals are exquisite. 8

BODYGUARD
FUCK!!! this is a bit Fleetwood Mac and feels like an immediate Beyoncé classic??? i need to devour this song all summer long. 10!!!

JOLENE
she sounds great and love the production but this is pointless. if you're singing to Jolene about how you're not threatened by her... the song is not Jolene. the desperation is the whole point! a shame as the choral part is a stunner.

I intend to dive in today and I’m definitely a fan but even for me 27 tracks feels very taxing.

I KNOW I am going to love a lot of this. I'm not looking forward to WADING through 27 tracks, interludes or no interludes though. I am a Beyoncé fan, not a stan. I will have to pick out the recommendations from here.

DAUGHTER
unfortunately I talked during and can't remember a thing about it. 7?

SPAGHETTII
I enjoyed this rapyoncé revival but the appearance of the male rapper (shaboozey whomst?!) did somewhat take me out of it - 7

ALLIGATOR TEARS
"you said change religions, now I spend Sundays with you". this is a stunner, that guitar driven beat is addictive. a future fave I feel. 8.5

JUST FOR FUN
I think the album is hitting its sultriest groove. this is fantastic. that chorus rolls over you in waves, she sounds lush. love Willie's camp as tits intro. 9

MOST WANTED
OK I liked this but there's something odd about the melodies and vocal arrangements that I need some time to get used to. 7

LEVII'S JEANS
surprisingly enjoying this one more! nice bounce keeping it rolling. they sound gorgeous together! "you're my renaissance." get it post. 8.5

YAYA
this is the banger for the gays who like to masquerade as straights. a tune for the queens in the bars in straight Louisiana if you will. it's funky! 8

RIIVERDANCE
this is beautiful. lovely vibes from the instrumental but almost feels like a fleshed out interlude rather than a full song that builds.
7.5

oooh straight segue into II HANDS II HEAVEN
oh this is really stunning! it's to Riiverdance what Virgo's Groove was to Plastic Off the Sofa — an elevation. "baby... I've been waitin... my whole life..." :disco: the deeper vocals at the end are so soothing.

to clarify it's funky the adjective not funky the poster, who is not a queen playing straight in the American deep south

TYRANT
one for the Pure/Honey queens. a late curveball. LOVE this! I am such a tyrant, everytime I ride it. the genre blending on this one is to die for. very hip hop, almost Atlanta sounding, but still that rodeo twang. a strange, dirty banger.

SWEET HONEY BUCKIN
look at that horse. pretty as hell. :D :disco: this feels like maybe the most overt callback to Renaissance? so naturally I'm wet for it. LIKE A MECHANICAL BULL.

AMEN
what a perfect hymn of a closer. this mid register is truly the sweet spot for her vocal. love the callback of American Requieum.
8.5

those 80 minutes honestly flew by :o what an album. she's done it again.

It is sprawling and the last third almost feels like its own separate album but good stuff here.

Bodyguard was the one I immediately went back to, definitely 70s/early 80s AOR vibes.

Daughter I was very much feeling even before it took THAT TURN :disco:

Flamenco might be pretty much an interlude but it is absolutely gorgeous, and she sounds incredible.

She has plenty of singles options here too.

Presumably, out of the 27 tracks, at least 10 are short interludey things, yes?

There's a lot to love. And a lot to digest. My first listen of Renaissance was a complete rush. This is different, but it's a different proposition.
