Awards Season 2021

Deserved for the Queen's Gambit, Schitt's Creek, and Ted Lasso

I really don't care do u for most of this nonsense but obviously they should keep inviting Tina and Amy FOREVER to drag everyone down with a smile.

I’ve seen Nomadland, and no matter how good it is (it’s a 7/10 for me), it’s a critic/press darling, but not what I’d personally think the Academy would love. Then again neither were Moonlight or Parasite, but I’m still not betting on it winning the Oscar just yet.

Just the fact that the Golden Globes nominated that Music film is simply mad.

The problem is the Musical/Comedy category. They always end up filling it up with SHIT compared to the drama category.

The Oscar nominations are out

I’m missing 3, Minari is the only one available that I haven’t watched. The Father and Nomadland aren’t out yet.

Close should send a Native American to pick up her Oscar if they DARE give her one for that shitty redneck film with the PLETHORA of UNREWARDED and UTTERLY ICONIC roles she has had in her career.

It might be Maria Bakalova or Yuh-Jung Youn, they’re the only two who actually won any awards of note.

My best picture ranking so far:

1. Promising Young Woman
2. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
3. The Trial of the Chicago 7
4. Judas and the Black Massiah
5. Sound of Metal
6. Mank

At least there are no embarrassing nominations

Fabulous. I'm only really missing a few. I've been on a potential awards nomination watching spree lately and have pretty much seen everything available for streaming. Downloaded quite a few of the others yesterday. It's only The Father which I can't find anywhere... an annoying title for web searches.

It hasn’t been released digitally yet. They’re going to a theatre release first.

I’m thinking this is the last nail in the coffin of the Golden Globes

Pretty safe to say Chadwick will win the Oscar for Leading Actor, any other year I'd have gone for Riz Ahmed. Sound of Metal is flawless.

Yeah I think Chadwick is a lock, I also doubt anyone can beat Frances in best actress (maybe Carey Mulligan).

I would think Kaluuya is also the front runner but having another actor from his movie in the same category might affect him.

I haven't yet seen Sound of Metal, Minari or The Father but Chadwick really should be a lock. While I think the Heath Ledger posthumous win was in part due to sympathy, Chadwick really was exceptional in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

As good as McDormand is in Nomadland, I can't wrap my head around her having 3 Best Actress Oscars and 2 so close together. I'd rather give Viola Davis her second and first for lead actress. I saw Pieces of a Woman at the weekend and Vanessa Kirby really is the only good thing about it.

Going to be catching up with most of the missing movies this weekend so will have more of an opinion/informed prediction then.

I certainly wouldn't be upset if Chadwick Boseman lost out to Riz as people have slept on him for far too long, but I genuinely believe Boseman deserves it.

I wouldn't rule out Amanda Seyfried, even without a Globe or SAG. The Academy will be desperate to give Mank prizes.

I'd much rather Mulligan win over McDormand but I'd be surprised if Nomadland doesn't win Actress, Director and Picture. It's massively overrated although I'll never admit that in public in case it gets me beaten with a stick.

Oddly the betting odds now have The Trial of the Chicago 7 as favourite for Best Picture. Just like Nomadland it’s a 6 or 7/10 film at best. Nothing exceptional at all so I’m just confused.

I mean the bets don’t follow quality. Trial is the movie that would appeal to the same people who voted for Green Book.

I mean it’s fine (I really enjoyed Trial on the other hand) but it’s when you look at everything around it and take a second consider its politics that it becomes iffy that it won best picture over movies that will have a bigger cultural footprint in the years to come.

I’ve only seen Trial so far - very good

which others are on Netflix/Prime?

Still waiting with bated breath for French Exit.

Shame Ms Pfeiffer didn’t get the Academy nod after being shortlisted for the Globes. Does this mean it’s not much cop after all.....?

The book by de Witt was my most favourite a few years back. I also enjoyed his Sisters Brothers book but that didn’t translate well to film. Wonder if this is the same thing.

Mank was a bit drab and hard to follow but Amanda Seyfriend was great - even if she invented an accent for her character that she didn't have :D

I watched this last night. It’s a relief that someone else found it hard to follow and I’m not just stupid

Two Distant Strangers coming to Netflix on 9th April.

It’s just White Eye and Opera missing from any known platform :(

Is The Father available through UNDESIRABLE MEANS since I don't have Amazon Prime? I thought it would be pants but after watching the trailer it does sound like a Hollywood Amour so my interest is PIQUED.

I did manage to get it this week from said undesirable means. I will see it at the cinema IF it comes out in May to appease my crimes, but just have to see it before the Oscars.
