Are you stuck? Have you tried Game FAQs?

Having played all other Dragon Quests, you NEED to use Buffs and Debuffs if you want to beat most bosses.

yeah peeks I have no idea how battles/fights work. I feel I haven't been adequately TRAINED as part of the game. I just keep dying and when I look at a walkthrough on YouTube, the guy has some crazy weapons I don't have. I've just been running through the game doing the main quest and a couple of side ones, not bothering with any shops or collecting things. is that an important part of these games?

OK bit better now, I did some more mooching around and got some extra skills. The fights are turn-based right? Just feels a bit weird so far but I'm sure I'll get used to it
