Drag Race Controversy & Drama Thread

It's a stupid and gross remark on Nina's part but somehow most of the queens' reactions feel really off the mark, especially Yvie's.

I agree that the comment is transphobic because it alludes to trans people having a "competitive advantage" in drag which is unfair and kind implies that Gottmik isn't fully "a man doing drag."

I also agree that overblown reactions achieve very little, particularly with Nina, who quite clearly experiences some issues with her mental health.

Someone apparently called 'Vinegar Strokes' popping off about Tayce

THE FUCKING NERVE!

Tayce was already a bigger and more entertaining star after the FIRST episode than Vinegar Flops ever could be.

It seems like a really straightforward case to prove too

Whatever point he was trying to make, he literally called her a paedophile :manson:

Who is he and what happened?

A British politician? Not sure I’m getting the right person.

Former actor, current provocative tweeter/racism denier/mayoral candidate/twat

I can’t help but feel this will bring him further publicity and grow his fanbase among the more cuntish side of the conservative base.

That doesn't change MUCH THOUGH does it? One awful right-wing celebrity just replaces another.

Probably. But he’s planning on running for mayor and I remember when we all though Boris didn’t stand a chance. These days PR = votes. And I dread the thought of this tosspot anywhere near politics

I mean, Katie Hopkins didn't exactly have a great time getting bankrupted when she defamed Jack Monroe :D

Not everything is a "whatever happens, they win!" move!

Yeah but the difference is everyone saying Boris didn't stand a chance was just being a bit dim, given if any Tory stood a chance in London, you'd probably have guessed it as the one who was every liberal/left winger's favourite Tory back then! (CHRIST how times change)

Laurence Fox is a nobody who isn't running for a main party and who most normal people have only half noticed, if they've heard of him. He only started his campaign last week for an election in a month. He'll be astonishingly lucky if he even holds his deposit.

Baga Chipz bullied off Twitter

I really hate stuff like this. As far as I can tell her worst crime is being a BIT THICK with her political opinions. These incessant pile-ons just push people further to the right.

Well, from the sound of it he said something nice about Prince Phillip, is that right?

If we're coming to a point where people are getting cancelled for not speaking ill of the dead then it's time to start worrying.

I'm not sure if there was more, but I saw this screenshot yesterday:

I'm guessing that second message could be read as a bit condescending and maybe people took the whole thing in the context of her previously mentioned Tory leanings, but it's definitely not right if people attacked her.

Jesus, what the fuck is wrong with people? Anyone criticising her for this needs to have a fucking look at themselves and realise they're very much part of the problem.

I think part of the problem with Twitter and other social media is that a lot of the people using it are literally children, and adults who have been using it since childhood who have essentially been socialised by it. People have no idea of how to talk to each other, or what's a proportional response to something.

The second message was almost two hours after the first, so I'm guessing it was a reaction to some of the responses she'd gotten to her first Tweet.

This is horrible. Just a load of people flocking together and feeling validated to be as vicious as they like because it feels like everyone else is doing it too. And yet they'd be the first people to tear down users on the other side of the spectrum for doing the same thing.

It feels like dialogue has just been tossed out the window.

Yeah, Twitter is a cess pit. People really have been conditioned to speak to each other in unacceptable ways.

I genuinely don’t understand how people have the stomach to engage in Twitter beef - I know some people who think of it as a fun activity? I find it quite terrifying.

i believe I was raised with traditional values - to have arguments in small private community forums, over text messages, and to call people and hang up when it got too much

Yep. A site full of histrionics and people who think being disproportionately venomous is in some way social justice.

I mean I still love the place and have had more than my fair share of cancellations, but yeah, you really do have to just ROLL YOUR EYES and take a big pinch of salt at some of the most vicious bad faith stuff. It's often a place where a thousand people scream at someone who really deserves a mate taking them aside for quiet word at most.

Do I think that, as Britain's leading Diana tribute, Baga Chipz should withhold praise for poor dead Phil? Yes. Do I think that she should be hounded out of public life? Also yes, but not for this.
