Hoi, has anyone played this game before? I am setting up a character for a game in a few weeks and need some .

So many of my friends play this, although I never have.

I know one of them wears a HORNED HELMET while playing (I have had it confirmed that she was not, in fact, at the storming of the Capitol building) so maybe look into getting props :disco:

Love D&D, but never had the necessary group of friends to become fluent at it.

A Moopy D&D will just end up being a fantasy Real Housewives :disco:

I like the idea of this in theory, but the one time I seriously tried it ended up being quite a miserable experience. Basically it was all done online over voice chat (this was pre-Covid) and it was a group of people that didn't know each other THAT well - well two of my friends were in it, and the three of us knew the DM quite well, but the other two people were basically strangers. We tried to make it work for a few weeks before abandoning it :( I think if I ever try again it'll be in-person only, and preferably with a group who already have a good connection with one another.

Exactly the same, except I tried it IN PERSON and it was STILL awful and miserable :D

Where I used to live there was one of those specialist gaming type of shops just round the corner (the ones that mostly seem to focus on obscure card type games and you wonder how they make a profit), and they had a D&D group where inexperienced people were encouraged to come along, so I tried. Admittedly some of it was my fault for not really looking it up beforehand, but it was a shambles and the explanations and help were beyond useless. I remember thinking "this is supposed to be fun" but after 2 hours feeling quite upset because I still didn't grasp it. I tried about 3 times. I thought it was just me, but years later I randomly spoke to one of the guys who pretty much agreed and said due to it closing down, no one was really in charge of the group at the time, so everything was half-arsed.

I think you're right, it's clearly better with people you know, or else a more "professional" set-up if not.

That being said...I'm really not sure the open-endedness of it was for me. I know there are set rules, but they are VAST and open and for someone who likes board games with reasonably clear objectives and boundaries, it was probably too much!

Okay so this is today and I’ve only just looked up what this is about really and I thought it was a game where you would move pieces or at least fight people online, but apparently it’s all acting and role-playing?? And I couldn’t be bothered to do my homework so I made HerSereneHighness do mine for me and now I don’t even know my backstory. Apparently I’m some ELF and something about crystals? AND this means I won’t get to watch Melodifestivalen live?? Omg

You're skipping MELFEST to play DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS?

Screw COVID, I'm jumping on a train right now to stage an emergency intervention.

Just say your character is going off on a secret quest that takes place in a neighbouring kingdom and lasts approximately 90 minutes (45 if Jessica goes out in the first round of voting)

I can’t do open ended board games. I will only agree to a game of monopoly when someone sets a limit of times around the board.

yeah I come back crying after 45 minutes and try to blow up Hammerfell

This is part of the problem I had with it, at least the way they did it in the group I played with. It's sort of half on-the-fly improv/creative writing challenge (creating your character's backstory and responding appropriately to events), and half detective game where you have to make notes about clues and stuff. You really have to be properly engaged with it - I think if it CLICKS it can be great fun, but it never did for me :(

I don’t really have a choice - I was thinking about maybe killing my character off really early - @COB is this possible??
It might be! But you might have an evil DM who has you become a ghost or something so you have to hang around :(

I think part of the problem for me was that I found the Tolkienesque fantasy setting far too generic - there are other similar tabletop games with different themes, I've always quite liked the sound of Call of Cthulhu because it's mostly about trying not to go insane and die.

To make my D&D experience more interesting, I made my character's secret backstory about avenging his father - who had been cursed by a wizard and turned into a grotesque human/animal hybrid, and was in fact none other than deeply unpopular 1990s videogame star Bubsy the Bobcat. Some of my fellow players didn't appreciate this injection of gnarly attitude into their serious goblins game, but I had to do SOMETHING.

I’m going to practice. “be gone fair maiden, för I must now ride into the valley of the kingdom of orks. Doesth thou know wherest Jessica Andersson placed in her heat of the trufflesnatchers? For if she be banished, then on this earth I shall no longer live”

Is it like that @COB

My original idea was to base my character on Amelle Berrabah and have her be fleeing from an assassination attempt, but HerSerene refused to play KeishaB :(

Pretty much :D

You don't HAVE to speak in character. In most games I have never bothered. However, I did have one gnome character that I put on a high pitched voice essentially copying WoW Gnomes and it was great fun.

Also don't worry too much about background, just have a couple of points that explain why you're in the adventure, and you can improvise anything else you need as you need it. The Dungeron Master will (if competent) ask you any questions about stuff they need to know in advance. And I am sure @Suomi, you're more than capable of coming up with things as you need to.

So tonight I was dressed as a dwarf and having a wonderful time as I actually killed a Dragon for the first time in my 5 years of playing this game.

Did you ever play it again @Suomi?

Get the dildo out hen you’ve done well x

Alas, I did not. I think I would be open to playing again but in person rather than online. I think the thing I found the most frustrating was playing with people who were so cautious - I’m chaotic good/evil and prefer just action ASAP.

It definitely helps when your party are on a similar wave length. The one I'm in now is very much attack first ask questions later and it's fun.

LOL who did you play this with? Incredibly I have never played despite playing every other game on the planet.

I cannot BELIEVE you gave up MF for it though!!

I love D&D but haven't had a chance to play play face to face in well over a decade. Playing online is still fun but nothing beats actually rolling dice and watching your DM's face crumple as we took out his precious dragon. :D

I think it also has a special place in my heart because in retrospect the fact I nearly always played female characters was sort of an early clue I might be trans.

Do chuid

Just listening to Imaginary Worlds podcast where they played a clip of a podcast with ‘actors’ playing D&D like they’re actually in an audio drama.

Sounded like a lot of amateur audio dramas :)
