The latest compilation from Bob Stanley, covering a somewhat neglected genre and quite the tracklisting:
  1. Expose - Point of No Return
  2. Janelle - Don't Be Shy (Vocal/radio Mix)
  3. Meg - Lover Girl
  4. Stacey Q - Two of Hearts (12" Version)
  5. Lisette Melendez - Together Forever (Radio Edit)
  6. Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force - I Wonder If I Take You Home
  7. Debbie Deb - When I Hear Music
  8. Nocera - Let's Go (Radio Version)
  9. Connie - Funky Little Beat
  10. Cover Girls - Show Me
  11. Pretty Poison - Nightime
  12. Company B - Fascinated (12" Version)
  13. Will to Power - Dreamin'
  14. Alisha - Baby Talk
  15. Lil Suzy - Take Me in Your Arms
  16. Cynthia - Thief of Heart
Already manifesting a volume two.

I've been inspired to delve into the Freestyle Spotify playlists this weekend. Some random choices in there but lots of good stuff.

Maybe it is licensing issues but the most notable omission from the compilation might be Sweet Sensation:

I love Shannon's Give Me Tonight and Seduction's Two To Make It Right would have been nice to have on there too.

On this side of the Atlantic SAW dabbled in the sound a bit but this is another favourite:

Noel’s Silent Morning !

So much stuff I already love here, I had no idea there was a genre bringing it all together. I think I just assumed it was House. How naive.

Why is it called Latin Freestyle?

I also didn’t know this was a genre and I also just pegged it as an offshoot of early house - Lisa Lisa &CJ in particular very influential on dance music and I’m very familiar with that Sweet Sensation song!

I looked it up on Spotify and honestly they're all 23,568/10 tits out, stamp on my neck BANGERS.

It's my new favourite old school genre.

There's a lot going on but I do love this one from Jenny Burton (see also One More Shot by C-Bank not on Spotify):

She had a couple of top 10s in the US with Full Force tracks but I wouldn’t really categorise them as Latin Freestyle.

It’s the classic thing of sticking a white girl on a watered down version of what was happening in the clubs, but production wise it’s still quite similar to a lot of the songs mentioned.

I was obviously aware of Fascinated but I wasn't previously acquainted with the full Company B fright wigs experience. Cue a youtube deep dive:

Not their best song but the routine and audience enthusiasm make up for it:

Post-wig era. This is fucking great :disco:

Finally a more recent incarnation tackling a cover of Cruel Summer. You get an exciting storyline (including a remarkable yoghurt bar scene), with just a brief shit wigs moment at the end:

Philippines Jaya's US #44 SMASH and freestyle gem "If You Leave Me Now" is on streaming platforms now too. :disco:
