According to the BBC:



In a five-year career, the rodent sniffed out over 100 landmines and other explosives in Cambodia.

Magawa was the most successful rat trained by the Belgian charity Apopo to alert human handlers about the mines so they can be safely removed.

The charity said the African giant pouch rat "passed away peacefully" at the weekend.

He was our generation's Princess Di :(

Apparently quite common for African giant pouched rats :o Normal rats only live for two to three years, I think :(

Two to three years for fancy (pet) rats. Wild brown rats usually live much less.

Probably not so common for rats that spend most of their time scurrying around minefields though
