I can't believe there are FOUR MCU films coming out in the second half of this year (TBC)

One of these has to (comparatively) flop doesn't it?! They're in such close proximity... the next three are probably all prime candidates :D Not that I want any of them to etc etc

I think Eternals is the most likely to have a disappointing result, it's an untested property and doesn't seem to have much connection to anything we've seen before... though the original Guardians of the Galaxy was in a similar situation and we saw what happened there :o

Agree - though it's probably the one I'm most perched for!

I also wonder if Shang-Chi might have a relatively disappointing box office in the US, but it could potentially be the biggest ever Marvel film in China so I don't think anyone's too worried there.

I got confused about the Disney+ thing and then realised that that's a calendar for the TV series right?

This is my main problem with the franchise - I LOVE the movies but I do not have the stamina to sit through any of the TV series on top. But because of that I feel like the kid in the class the day after everyone else went to a party. Marvel loves its in jokes and easter eggs and playing with continuity and I feel like I'm missing half of everything.

ANYWAY - some thoughts from me

I have no idea who Shang-Chi is... is it a Dr Strange spinoff?

I feel like I'm going to need to do a little bit of background reading on Eternals... I think that one is quite important in the canon, no?

He-Man AGOG at that Thor logo

Mostly looking forward to Black Panther 2 and curious how they'll expand the story without him

Does the world really need another Ant-Man movie

I'm wondering what the common thread is and I hope it leads to another big war :) though it's going to be weird without Iron Man or Black Widow or the original CA.

@funky this was the main grip with people I kept recommending both the Falcon and Wandavision series, they're full of easter eggs and references that you'd have to watch at least 7 movies of the ones already existing. (Including Antman so, sorry!) regardless though, they are very good considering they're TV SHOWS.

I have heard good things of Wandavision. If I had Disney+ I would have watched that.

As somebody who's seen around a third of the MCU movies, I found Wandavision to be a lot of fun and relatively accessible. Falcon & Winter Soldier was a stone bore though.

I have watched all of the films and I enjoyed WandaVision, but have little interest in the other shows. I just hope there aren’t any tie-ins in the films where you have to have watched the other shows to understand. That would just be too much.

The thing I noticed with F&WS in particular, was that the status quo at the end of it (the broad strokes at least) is actually exactly the same for the two main characters as it was at the end of Endgame, the last time we saw them. I expect most of the series to work in a similar way, where they tell their story but there isn't THAT much you're missing out on if you just stick to the films. That will probably go out of the window once we get to stuff like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk though, who are being introduced in their own series before appearing in films :o

Yeah I’d say those TV shows mainly focus on characters who might have a lead-in from the movies but it’s not the driving force behind the story.

In Wandavision the story beats were described enough to motivate the story I think, I don’t feel I needed to see Ultron or even Endgame.

it’s ok if the Easter eggs are Easter eggs, ie tucked away and don’t need to be understood by everyone.

I think Marvel have a decent grasp on the balance of how to introduce new viewers while keeping uberfans happy

I think that’s good, not all movies will (or need to) turn into franchises, and that’s a way of skipping through it being “An Origin Movie” which sort of limits what you can do

Ron Jr is totes excite about all of this.

I like Marvel without loving it, we usually watch them on Sundays as a family when mummy and daddy are 'very tired' - but what's been interesting is that he's been studying the Vikigins at school, which feeds off his love for Thor/Loki and now his next bedtime book is going to be Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology :D

Here's the thing though, I wonder how will they manage to handle Doctor Strange 2 for casual viewers who didn't watch Wandavision since they're supposed to be connected. I hope Disney+ keeps releasing these small 5 minute summaries so you can have a decent grasp of what happened before.

I’m a bit over it all at the moment. I still watch everything but there’s nothing interesting going on. Wandavision had a fun gimmick but then ended up being blah by the end, Winter Soldier was the same while being blah from the beginning.

It’s all setup for what’s to come next and all extremely bland.

Also the quote from Kevin Feige about how he didn’t know that they could do a sunset without green screen until Chloe Zhao did it is very :goodgrief:

Not sure there'll be the interest for a separate thread, but the What If series started on Disney+ today - it's an animated series where each episode explores a 'what if' scenario, the first episode being 'what if Peggy Carter took the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers'. I thought it was quite fun, and I enjoyed that they got most of the movie actors back to voice their characters.

Ok I guess, the Spider-Man movies got gradually worse and it’s understandable to want a break from the machine.

Do you think so? :o I thought NWH was the best one!

Fantastic Four really is cursed (I did quite like the early 00s ones though)

I'm not too concerned about this, Watts is fine if a bit anonymous (but not many directors working in the Marvel machine AREN'T, so fair enough) and there's no way they won't throw everything at the FF movie as they'll be aware of the pressure to finally make a good one/break the curse.

I'm still very curious about what the plan for the MCU FF is... I know it's a bit of a well-trodden trope at this point, but I really do think they should make them heroes from the Sixties who somehow end up in the present day. The previous attempts at bringing them up to date didn't work, and that Silver Age wonder and optimism could be fun to play around with. Also they should really build up Doctor Doom as a huge threat across an entire phase of movies, he has the potential to be even more iconic than Thanos if they nail it.

With the multiverse a thing they can definitely build towards evil Reed Richards being the threat.

Marvel Studios are at Comic-Con today and a few announcements are expected, which may or may not be related to the following leaked copyright applications:
Captain America: New World Order
Thunderbolts
Avengers: Secret Wars
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
The Multiverse Saga (assuming that this one is an overall title like the Infinity Saga rather than a movie)
There's also Disney's D23 event in September, so I'd expect some announcements to be held back for that.
