Meat Loaf DEAD

They never performed it live together. I’m not sure Cher ever has solo either.

Surprised to see so many Meatloaf fans on here!

I was never really a fan but respect his talent, and I have to say I still think the Lorraine Crosby/Patti Russo cameo on IWDAFL is still possibly the greatest feature on any rock song ever. Those lyrics! That delivery! 7:58:

GOOSEBUMPS!

RIP.

I think this calls for a Grammys tribute with Gaga doing the female part right now!

I forget that I once went through a Melanie Griffith phase and saw him in Crazy In Alabama (1999). I remember almost nothing from it other than a swimming pool scene. And then I see his next film being Fight Club, which I've never seen.

He was very good in Fight Club, it was the first time I'd seen him as a 'serious' actor and I was surprised.

How did I miss that he had a top ten hit as recently as 2006 with a cover of "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" and the chart run doesn't suggest it was a one- week fan base purchase...?

Gene Simmons was just on BBC Breakfast (see, he knows) talking about his friend 'Meat' and they showed an old photo of him, Cher and Meat Loaf :(

I am hoping some documentaries or tribute programmes come out soon, i'd like to delve further into his career. As as been said, I think Meat Loaf defines a lot of the generation before us, i know so many people who's parents were massive fans.

I'm planning on investigating Bat Out Of Hell II this morning.

"Life Is A Lemon And I Want My Money Back" and "Good Girls Go To Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere)" already sound like classics from the titles alone (thanks Jim) :disco:

It's actually really good. I never investigated at the time- boring old man rock- and presumed for years it would be a tedious, soft- rock rehash, but it's actually great!

I've never investigated III though...

II is an all-time favourite album of mine, I've played it even more than the original Bat Out Of Hell over the years

III suffers from dragging on a bit too long (it's around the same length as II, but just feels a lot longer) and the non-Steinman tracks vary in quality, but I still think it's a worthwhile listen

I don’t think it’s surprising that gay pop fans like us enjoy him. His music was camp as tits! Trust me, it won’t be like this when, say, Lars Ulrich dies.

I don't enjoy him much at all (detest the voice) but I can appreciate it. How can anyone with a sense for the utterly ludicrous not?!

He's dominating streaming too. At this stage there's a reasonable chance Bat Out of Hell will be number 1 next week.

Which would be quite fitting. Originally no.15 in 1979, then number 8 in 1994.

Does anybody have a list of his best-selling UK singles? (@ManicKangaroo ?)

I was hoping the Official Charts Company would publish it yesterday.

Sadly only on Youtube in potato quality, but I have very fond childhood memories of the utterly ridiculous video for I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)

This was posted on ukmix in October. I imagine the OCC will release more stats soon.

TOTAL MEAT LOAF SALES IN UK:10'715'000

It’s mental how big of a chart hit I’d Do Anything For Love was but still didn’t get anywhere near 1m sales in the UK. Sales in 1993 were abysmal.

And if it was two or three years ago, I bet it would be 5× platinum with 3m 'sales' now. Possibly more.

There's only a couple close to a million (which his death will probably push over the threshold soon)

Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) 0.97m
Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell 0.90m

It'd be a good top 5 round for my quiz, but it's tough because I reckon streaming has probably changed the order below that top two, compared to his highest charting singles.

Paradise By The Dashboard Light, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad and You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth seem to be far bigger on Spotify than I'd Lie For You, Dead Ringer and Not A Dry Eye In The House.

Thanks! In the absence of anything official I'll go with that.

800,000 sales seems very high for Dead Ringer for Love though! It only got to #5, and doesn't seem like one of his biggest back catalogue sellers.

It also looks like it was certified as silver way back in 1982 and hasn't been certified since. Obviously we know that labels don't always claim the awards, but they were happy to claim a platinum certification for Bat Out Of Hell in June last year, so it may seem odd that they didn't claim another for Dead Ringer For Love, should it be available.

800k does seem high but it was a fairly big seller- Wikipedia says it was 48th overall in 1982 and considering it had six weeks sales in 1981 (which would have been high selling weeks), plus at least one reissue, it’s got to be fairly high up his list nonetheless.

It's #43 of 1982 in the revised list published last year alongside those chart shows. 3 places below 'My Camera Never Lies' though, and that only limped to silver. I bet with the 1981 sales Dead Ringer will have outsold it at the time, but I'd imagine it would still be comfortably closer to silver than gold back then. It would certainly have done much better than Camera with reissue and streaming since though.

The actual estimate was 775k rounded up to 800k for this post.

Having spoken to him there's a possible 50k margin so it may only be on 725k but is still the 3rd best-seller.

Hopefully we'll get an official update from the OCC when he charts this week.

Bat Out of Hell the album peaks at no.3 this week. Only the 5th week in the top 10.

Hits at no.5, BOOH 2 at 24.

Singles Chart wise Bat Out of Hell at 26, Anything at 32, Two out of Three at 46.

All from different albums so it's weird that they seem to have applied the 3 track rule.

The three track rule only states it's tracks by the same artist not that they have to be from the same album, as much as it was Sheeran's '÷' which seemed to prompt it.

Plus of course Sheeran gets around it with his feature spots, anyway.
