I don’t like the removal of reprises but having listened to a reporter talk about it in more detail it does sound like they’ve done the research/data to support the change as something exciting for tv viewers, having spent the past year developing it.

This is the other thing I don’t like, although in 2011 it did lead to Linda’s victory moment.

I suppose if the direct finalist is just based on raw votes, then the second finalist winning on points makes it a separate kind of victory.

I thought so, based on:

The finalists are thus appointed in two different ways: the one who receives the most votes in total in the first round of voting and the one who receives the highest score from the different age categories after the second round of voting.

What I do like though, thinking about it, is the gift of hope it will bring us Shirley and Linda stans as they flirt with a 4th place qualification and we have to scream and pray that the OAPs sitting at home like Carola and RaspberrySwirl will do the right thing and tip them over the line at the very end.

Just as an example, I would have enjoyed how One Touch by vocal legend Kadiatou would have been on course for a top 4 place until the over 30s chucked her off a cliff:
