Probably because they weren't his. He licensed his name out to pretty much anyone who would pay for it, and ended up diluting his legacy and became a department store darling for the Middle Class. But he himself, I believe, stopped designing decades ago and just lived off the royalties.

I think Selma Blair was close with him. I remember seeing her in a magazine with one of his old designs and it was gorgeous. Can't seem to find the picture.
