Is anyone a poetry reader (or writer)?

I always want to read more of it because when I do sit down and put the effort in I enjoy it, and I like going to poetry nights and poetry slams when I can, but truthfully I feel quite ignorant about poetry in general. I've written a few and am happy enough with one or two of them but it seems a bit fraudulent to write poetry when you barely take the time to read and explore it as a genre.

I do think poetry is taught so terribly in schools and is so exclusive to older/dead seemingly heterosexual males that it puts people off for life.

Does anyone have a poet or poets they love that they'd recommend? I'm about to go on a buying spree.

Or if you have a poem you'd like to share post it here!

I love 'Kissing in Vietnamese' by Ocean Vuong:

My grandmother kisses
as if bombs are bursting in the backyard,
where mint and jasmine lace their perfumes
through the kitchen window,
as if somewhere, a body is falling apart
and flames are making their way back
through the intricacies of a young boy’s thigh,
as if to walk out the door, your torso
would dance from exit wounds.
When my grandmother kisses, there would be
no flashy smooching, no western music
of pursed lips, she kisses as if to breathe
you inside her, nose pressed to cheek
so that your scent is relearned
and your sweat pearls into drops of gold
inside her lungs, as if while she holds you
death also, is clutching your wrist.
My grandmother kisses as if history
never ended, as if somewhere
a body is still
falling apart.

And my favourite from the past few years is Paula Meehan (who has actually been around for years and is quite prolific, not that I had a clue).

'Child Burial'

Your coffin looked unreal, fancy as a wedding cake

I chose your grave clothes with care, your favourite stripey shirt

your blue cotton trousers They smelt of woodsmoke, of October,

your own smell there too. I chose a gansy of handspun wool,

warm and fleecy for you. It is so cold down in the dark.

No light can reach you and teach you the paths of wild birds,

the names of the flowers the fishes, the creatures

Ignorant you must remain of the sun and its work,

my lamb, my calf, my eaglet my cub, my kid, my nestling

my suckling, my colt. I would spin time back, take you again

within my womb, your amniotic lair, and further spin you back

through nine waxing months to the split seeding moment

you chose to be made flesh, word within me.

I'd cancel the love feast the hot night of your making.

I would travel alone to a quiet mossy place,

you would spill from me into the earth drop by bright red drop.

Im really fond of Dylan Thomas - Fern Hill. Back when festivals were a thing I used to take a copy of his selected works with me. A lot of them are weird, and fucking hell Do not go gently is over rated, but there are some of his works that just have such a nice ring to them. Plus he was rock and roll before it was a thing.

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs
About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green,
The night above the dingle starry,
Time let me hail and climb
Golden in the heydays of his eyes,
And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns
And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves
Trail with daisies and barley
Down the rivers of the windfall light.

And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barns
About the happy yard and singing as the farm was home,
In the sun that is young once only,
Time let me play and be
Golden in the mercy of his means,
And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calves
Sang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and cold,
And the sabbath rang slowly
In the pebbles of the holy streams.

All the sun long it was running, it was lovely, the hay
Fields high as the house, the tunes from the chimneys, it was air
And playing, lovely and watery
And fire green as grass.
And nightly under the simple stars
As I rode to sleep the owls were bearing the farm away,
All the moon long I heard, blessed among stables, the nightjars
Flying with the ricks, and the horses
Flashing into the dark.

And then to awake, and the farm, like a wanderer white
With the dew, come back, the cock on his shoulder: it was all
Shining, it was Adam and maiden,
The sky gathered again
And the sun grew round that very day.
So it must have been after the birth of the simple light
In the first, spinning place, the spellbound horses walking warm
Out of the whinnying green stable
On to the fields of praise.

And honoured among foxes and pheasants by the gay house
Under the new made clouds and happy as the heart was long,
In the sun born over and over,
I ran my heedless ways,
My wishes raced through the house high hay
And nothing I cared, at my sky blue trades, that time allows
In all his tuneful turning so few and such morning songs
Before the children green and golden
Follow him out of grace,

Nothing I cared, in the lamb white days, that time would take me
Up to the swallow thronged loft by the shadow of my hand,
In the moon that is always rising,
Nor that riding to sleep
I should hear him fly with the high fields
And wake to the farm forever fled from the childless land.
Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,
Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

I despise poetry. Although I did get into some WW1 trenches shit at Uni, which was a bit much really.

I mainly despise it because there was an OTT poet at my Sixth Form in the mid 90s (everything you're imagining is correct). He used to turn up and ruin all the events. A convo came up recently on FB and turns put everyone hated him.

Also the one poem I remember studying in GCSE English was Auden's Stop All The Clocks which is notably homosexual in its subject.

There's a lot of gay and queer subtext throughout the whole curriculum, but generally the writer didn't identify as LGBTQ or wasn't out (obviously, as they're all most dead), and even at that you are/were reliant on having an English lit teacher who was comfortable exploring those themes which I imagine to be rare.

We broached it once I think when we did Shall I Compare Thee, and I remember being so thrilled to have gayness mentioned in school. And in terms of overall literature we mentioned it when we did Catcher in the Rye with Holden's old teacher, and maybe with Jordan and Nick's relationship in Gatsby.

Maybe things have changed, but I'm doubtful.

OK true!

You're still reliant on adequate coverage being given to the poem and a teacher willing to discuss it and analyse it though.

After School, Street Football, Eighth Grade​

Their jeans sparkled, cut off
way above the knee, and my
friends and I would watch them
from my porch, books of poems
lost in our laps, eyes wide as
tropical fish behind our glasses.

Their football flashed from hand
to hand, tennis shoes gripped
the asphalt, sweat's spotlight on
their strong backs. We would
dream of hugging them, and crouch
later in weird rooms, and come.

Once their ball fell our way
so two of them came over, hands
on their hips, asking us to
throw it to them, which Arthur did,
badly, and they chased it back.
One turned to yell, “Thanks”

and we dreamed of his long
teeth in our necks. We
wanted them to wander over,
place deep wet underarms to
our lips, and then their white
asses, then those loud mouths.

One day one guy was very tired,
didn't move fast enough,
so a car hit him and he sprawled
fifty feet away, sexy, but he was
dead, blood like lipstick, then
those great boys stood together

on the sidewalk and we joined them,
mixing in like one big friendship
to the cops, who asked if we were,
and those boys were too sad to counter.
We'd known his name, Tim, and how
he'd turned to thank us nicely

but now he was under a sheet
anonymous as God, the big boys crying,
spitting words, and we stunned
like intellectuals get, our high
voices soft as the tinkling of a
chandelier on a ceiling too high to see
