Ahead of my next One More Time club night (1999 on 19th March) - hope those Moopsters who made 1998 night can make this, I thought I'd kick off some pop memories of 1999.

We had what seemed like every 'ageing' diva going to Metro or other producers for a new version of Believe (hi Tina Turner, Diana 'I want a little more bass' Ross, Belinda Carlisle, Mike & The Mechanics, Lulu and Donna Summer). And poor Gloria trying to keep her Gloria! campaign going having gone early on the divas do dance craze.

The girl groups got some instruments - hi Hepburn and Thunderbugs and the 21st Century Girls (whose career ironically never made it into the 21st Century).

And obviously THIS which got poo pooed by the music snobs but was a glorious moment in pop.

It seemed there were shedloads of new manufactured pop bands and solo acts launched each month!

I just seem to remember a lot of Lolly and Vengaboys. I don’t have fond memories from the time, although it was an epic year for films.

The number ones:

06 Chef - Chocolate Salty Balls
10 Steps - Heartbeat/Tragedy
08 Fatboy Slim - Praise You
00 911 - A Little Bit More
06 The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
08 Armand Van Helden - You Don't Know Me
10 Blondie - Maria
06 Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
11 Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time
01 Boyzone - When The Going Gets Tough
10 B*Witched - Blame It On The Weatherman
05 Mr Oizo - Flat Beat
08 Martine McCutcheon - Perfect Moment
06 Westlife - Swear It Again
10 Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
00 Boyzone - You Needed Me
07 Shanks & Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate
05 Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
07 S Club 7 - Bring It All Back
09 Vengaboys - Boom Boom Boom Boom!
07 ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)
08 Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca
00 Ronan Keating - When You Say Nothing At All
07 Westlife - If I Let You Go
10 Geri Halliwell - Mi Chico Latino
07 Lou Bega - Mambo #5
08 Vengaboys - We're Going To Ibiza!
08 Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Di)
10 Christina Aguilera - Genie In a Bottle
05 Westlife - Flying Without Wings
06 5ive - Keep On Movin'
08 Geri Halliwell - Lift Me Up
03 Robbie Williams - She's The One / It's Only Us
08 Wamdue Project - King of my Castle
00 Cliff Richard - The Millenium Prayer
06 Westlife - I Have a Dream / Seasons In The Sun

Boyzone really STINK UP that list.

In retrospect, much as they filled me with white hot rage at the time, Westlife were the far superior gloopy boyband in those early years before they just became a covers act.

Thank Abba For The Music is a fucking amazing moment.

If I Let You Go is a Grade A bop.

A 05 for the series of bips, bleeps and noise that is Flat Beat! Even the Boyzone ones were better than that.

Spice Girls and All Saints aside (ok Aqua too), it seemed every big pop act from the late 90s had something happening in 1999 - B*Witched, Billie, Steps, Cleopatra, Another Level, Five, A1, Boyzone, S Club, Vengaboys, Boyzone, Westlife, Destiny's Child, Britney, Christina, Martine, George Michael, Backstreet Boys, N Sync.... even Eternal and Kelle Bryan returned to have one last pop at the charts.

I had to dig up the #2s to have an excuse to talk about Sash! but to my dismay it seems he got them in 97,98 and 2000

Sorry they’re in reverse order but I’m doing it on my phone

Mind you, the UK pop acts basically released an album every year to get the Christmas rush!

Omg too much :disco:

Also, this was the first song I heard after leaving school for the last time, so it will forever be linked with 1999 and make me just a little bit emotional.

Poor Sash! had a solitary #15 hit with Colour The World (bop). You could do a list of #15 hits if you wanted?

The number 2 hits almost as iconic as the number 1's list.

1999 really was the year the labels threw everything at pop acts and spunked tons of money up the wall to get a hit. Can you imagine them shelling out as much as they did for Lolly nowadays (let alone adjusted for inflation)?

A1, 5ive, Phats & Small 😍😍😍 Plus I feel like TRANCE was in full flow. Gatecrasher and all that.
Planning a few trance medleys. Especially for the first hour or so!

I'd like to! We have vague plans with two sets of friends and I don't really know what's happening with either at the moment 🤷‍♂️ so I might get my machievellan on and try and make it happen
Would be fab! If they want a great trip down memory lane with tons of those "OMG I FORGOT ABOUT THAT SONG" moments, they will be in for a treat!

I barely remember any of the music of 1999, as I along with the rest of the world was just too caught up in Jar Jar Binks mania

I was going through my New Kids On The Block "nostalgia" phase when Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre did their solo albums in 1999. Feels weird having nostalgia over something barely 10 years later now.

spinning around in my kitchen to my mum's copy of Come On Over, naturellement :disco:

POUR ME A COLD ONE (I yelled to my poor overworked mother)

Added to the fact that even that was 20 years ago!

He was on my pencil case :disco:
