Cowell will live on with BGT, but surely he has to accept that X Factor is beyond saving now.

It's also worth noting that of The Apprentice's 6.068m total this week (7 day consolidation), only 2.641m was live viewing. No other show in the chart has less half its total from live viewing.

I guess having I'm a Celebrity as live competition must have made it something to be caught up on to an even greater degree.

Did anyone watch Elizabeth is Missing? Glenda Jackson QoL. What a fantastic, heart rending piece of tv.

That IACGMOOH figure is the average for the week including the final. The final alone got 10.534m and would have ended up #2 overall. However, the other episodes went down to 8.5m, bringing the average down.

Brilliant. I had no idea we were getting a Christmas special, and shall of course be tuning in.

I had no idea either, and it's on tomorrow night in the usual slot, so I would have thought it was just another old repeat had I not just seen a trailer.

The highly-anticipated second series of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s gripping spy thriller Killing Eve has taken out the competition to become BBC iPlayer’s biggest series of the year*.
The Golden Globe-nominated continuing battle between Eve and Villanelle achieved a staggering 40.4m requests on iPlayer, over 10m requests more than the next closest series.

Police thriller Line Of Duty’s fifth series took the second spot, with 27.4m requests, with period crime drama Peaky Blinders’ fifth series just behind it on 26.6m. Killing Eve’s first series also makes the top ten as people revisited the show or decided to find out what all the fuss was about, with 22.3m requests in 2019. Going back to 2018, the two series of Killing Eve combined have now generated a staggering 105m requests in total.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s other hit show this year, Fleabag, also features in the top ten. The second and final series is iPlayer’s biggest comedy of the year, with 20.3m requests for the series.

Other shows to make the top ten include favourites like Strictly Come Dancing, The Apprentice and MasterChef, as well as tense new drama The Capture, which was the year’s biggest new show.

There were also plenty of unmissable sporting and music events this year - the Wimbledon men’s singles final is the top live episode, with 1.6 million live stream requests, and Stormzy’s iconic Glastonbury headline set delivered 1.3m requests across both live and on-demand streams. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 was another big success on iPlayer with 8.7m requests across the competition.

BBC iPlayer has also been proving increasingly popular with younger viewers. 2019 has seen almost a quarter (24%) of under 35-year olds visiting iPlayer in an average week, with titles like RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, The Rap Game and Waterloo Road proving particularly popular with younger audiences.

November marked the biggest ever month for iPlayer, with 439m requests. New fantasy drama His Dark Materials and landmark natural history series Seven Worlds, One Planet were the month’s biggest programmes, plus there were strong performances from Gold Digger, The Apprentice, and The War Of The Worlds.

Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, BBC, says: "It's been a huge year for BBC iPlayer - as well as record-breaking figures, it's become an entertainment destination in its own right; and with approval for new programmes to be available for a minimum of 12 months, this will deliver real value for licence fee payers. In 2020 we will go even further to make it the best watch ever from binge-worthy series to the biggest live TV moments.”

Dan McGolpin, Controller of iPlayer for the BBC, says: “This year we’ve seen some of television’s most exciting shows return to BBC iPlayer, from Killing Eve to Line Of Duty and from Peaky Blinders to Fleabag, the number of programme requests we’ve received has been incredible. What’s also really satisfying is that brand new series such as The Capture, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, His Dark Materials and Seven Worlds, One Planet have also generated large audiences. Together with our live event coverage, this year including Glastonbury, the Women’s World Cup and the General Election 2019, BBC iPlayer is a unique service that is going to get even bigger and better in 2020.”

Peaky Blinders, Killing Eve, The Capture, Fleabag, His Dark Materials, RuPaul’s Drag Race and Seven Worlds, One Planet are all available to watch now on BBC iPlayer, alongside many other series.

* Continuing series (EastEnders, Breakfast, Holby City etc) have been excluded from this analysis for fair comparison, but remain hugely popular on iPlayer; children’s titles are also not included.

I quite enjoy Dragons Den too. My only gripe is that the dragons invest in roughly 2 pitches per show, but we never really hear much about the businesses afterwards. I watched a programme once presented by Richard Osman that did revisit some of the businesses, but I think it was only a 30 minute show. I want to know MORE.

Someone heard your request. 'From Pitches To Riches?' on at 8pm this evening, and presumably iplayer for a good while after.

That almost makes the celeb series look like a runaway success. It will be interesting to see how the Little Mix series does. I don't think I will bother watching it myself as I am right off singing contest programmes but I'll keep my fingers crossed for it.

We have The Voice starting Saturday 4th January as well.

I think I'll at least try the Little Mix one. And I want it to do at least reasonably well, just to piss Cowell off.

Oh, and that Masked Singer is starting the same day as The Voice, too.

I still don't understand why people watch TV on Christmas Day. It's the last thing I'd even think about. Yes, I understand I'm probably on my own here. I actually just realised that I hadn't even switched on the TV for three whole days until this morning.

What on earth do you do all day?

The only TV programme I watched on my actual television was the QI Christmas special which was only because I'd just finished watching The Man Who Fell To Earth on DVD so it was already on plus I knew Sara Pascoe was on it.
But I watched a few things on iPlayer - Mock The Week, Breaking The News and Vic and Bob.

That would make it the most watched programme of the year. I think the finale of Line Of Duty was previously the highest with just over 15m.

That's the first time EastEnders has beaten Emmerdale in the ratings since I started posting them. And it's solely due to the Christmas episode which had 6.8m viewers. Without that episode it would have a lower average, so I'm assuming it's a Christmas related one off, rather than any real resurgence. I guess we'll see how well it holds up next week.

17 million for Gavin and Stacey? That is ASTRONOMICAL in this climate.

Good figures for Call The Midwife too. Am I right in saying ratings have held up well for it compared to most other shows?

I think so. That was the show on Christmas Day though, so we'll see how it goes for the series proper.

Biggest show of the year. Biggest Christmas Day show for 12 years. Biggest comedy for 17 years.

I had never actually watched an episode of Gavin and Stacey, but recorded the Christmas Day episode. Rather than watch the Christmas Day episode first I have downloaded every episode before, and must say I am thoroughly enjoying it. I’m really not sure how I managed to miss it first time round.
