UK Charts / Midweeks 2022

How random yet nice that Maritza from Orange Is The New Black might end up being featured on a UK #1 single.

I hope that makes up for the unfortunate deportation incident. :(

I was a bit surprised seeing the Wombats #1 during the midweeks, just to reach #1 and realise that they're not those puppets with a similar name, whatever it is.

I thought I'd keep a record week by week of what is #1 overall, compared to sales and streaming

Bruno back on top today but it's close

1 Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz & Encanto Cast - We Don't Talk About Bruno (19,628)
2 Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran - Peru (18,819)

Is "Bat Out Of Hell" likely to land high or did it tail off quickly?

Bruno dropping from No.1 to No.9 this week because of the dumb 'halve songs streams suddenly' rule. Why don't they do it on a more gradual basis? Reduce it by 10%, then another 10%, until it's down to 50%? It makes for dumb things happening in the charts like a song holding onto number 1 for seven weeks, then suddenly eight songs overtake it out of the blue.

Had ACR not existed it would have still been beaten by Dave but not plummeted to 9

EXACTLY. So the rule is even more pointless - it shows that it wasn't even necessary!

It's the plummeting to 9 that is a problem - it makes the charts even more artificial than they already are. If they must do it, they should do a drop to 90% then 80% then 70% then 60% then 50% over a 5 week period, so the effect isn't so drastic so suddenly.

I think I might like the idea of continuing the reductions until streaming isn't included at all - or perhaps kept at something like a minimal 10% or something. All the 50% does is create that huge artificial drop, then cause the clog further down the chart.

I know that would give more priority to sales over streaming later in the run, but by that stage I think it's fair enough. And I don't think it would really favour sales over streaming higher up in the chart, because sales are so low now that it wouldn't make a massive difference - the final chart already massively favours streaming over sales in the final calculation. It would just allow newer songs to break into the chart whether their total sales come from actual sales or streaming. It would allow the chart to be a bit less stagnant.

The chart rules are so bloody complex and arbitrary now that inevitably what you're left with is pretty artificial, but at least make the chart look more interesting and consistent.

As an example this week:

Dave - Starlight: Streaming #1, Sales #35, Overall #1
Griff & Sigrid - Head On Fire: Streaming not in top 100, Sales #1, Overall #44

Or indeed look at We Don't Talk About Bruno - Overall #1 for 7 weeks, despite peaking at #2 for a single week on sales about 7 weeks ago.

I really don’t understand the chart rules at all anymore. They just don’t make any sense.

At this point they might as well just include airplay; at least it might mix up the genres a bit and let some older artists get hits again. Airplay is not that much different to streaming given how editorial streaming is. The platforms decide what go into the handful of playlists that the majority of people passively listen to. That’s very similar to how radio playlists are created.

There's little or no merit in having one overall single or album chart now. The album chart, in particular, is now complete nonsense. The rules on what constitutes a stream of an album need to be severely tightened up.

Both charts have got some major issues and I guess it’s hard to determine how to solve it.

Christmas sums it up for me - for about four weeks it’s about 50/75 of the chart is old Xmas tracks. Yes they are popular, and yes they are being consumed, but does it hold any relevance as to what the ‘current top 40’ is? We never used to measure consumption, it what was available and purchased in stores, but maybe that itself is outdated? Who knows. I do think airplay is a fair thing to bring in given playlists have huge impacts on streaming, and I do genuinely feel a large part of the population are not measured for the charts solely because they do not use streaming and instead listen to the radio.

Then there‘s the album chart as @octophone has pointed out, with their weird streaming measures and cassettes sending clear niche fan base acts into the top ten before gigantic drops out the chart completely the following week.

Charli XCX leading the charge this week

1 Charli XCX - CRASH (9,791) [8,036 physical] *
2 Sea Girls - Homesick (6,979) *
3 Feeder - Torpedo (4,676) *
4 ArrDee - Pier Pressure (4,147) *
5 Ed Sheeran - = (2,771)

I was hoping it would be a bit closer so that Charli's CD price would drop for a few days! No download with the vinyl? In 2022? RUDE.

Wednesday update

1 Charli XCX - CRASH (12,565) *
2 Sea Girls - Homesick (8,113) *
3 ArrDee - Pier Pressure (6,218) *
4 Ed Sheeran - = (5,162)
5 Feeder - Torpedo (5,112) *

ArrDee is a teenage rapper who’s had a number 1 hit when his verse went viral on TikTok. He’s had a bunch of other top 10 hits

Is Ardee the one who has done that utterly lazy cover of Ashanti’s “Baby”?

Honestly who are all these kids who are quite happy listening to generic chavvy white rappers deliver these awfully monotone half-asleep bars?

No that’s Aitch. They are identical though

I know it’s not that old, and it’s obviously a well loved song, but to be top 40 of the year in its fourth calendar year since release perhaps stretches the point of the chart reflecting current tastes.

Well yeah point taken

Though :D at “fourth calendar year” as a way to beef up a song that hasn’t reached 2.5 years yet, the AUDACITY!

I read something about the first ever fungal purchases being eligible for the next chart, but I can’t remember where I read it. Also, what is a fungal purchase?
