Thought it warranted a new thread. Anyone doing it this year? I’ve decided to try for the first time ever- mainly to kick healthy eating back into gear but also to get excited about interesting new things to cook.

Background is I’m pescetarian (two years really, but will be no meat whatsoever for a year on NYE) and eat a fair amount of vegan stuff already, but rely far too heavily on cheese and eggs, which I adore.

WHO’S WITH ME?

I've been thinking about doing it. I'm also a pescatarian but I feel like I've been eating so much dairy lately, which probably counteracts any good I do from not eating meat. One month probably wouldn't be too hard, especially during a time its pretty much impossible to go out to eat.

That’s what I’m thinking. Although eating out makes it easier- loads of vegan options here last year during January.

My eating out excuse may be kind of a cop-out. The last few places I've eaten out all have vegan options

I could easily drop dairy and don't eat fish anyway because it's the food of the devil, but dropping meat altogether, no thanks. Is there even a word for meat eaters who don't eat seafood or dairy?

I’ve done Veganuary before. I think my priority this January should be saving money and eating better more generally so I think i’ll ditch takeaways for a month instead.

Going vegan is great but PRICEY in my experience.

I don’t know WHAT I’d eat if I cut out dairy/fish/meat :D

I’m sure there are options out there but I doubt I’d enjoy any of them. January for me will be spent eating healthier, getting back on the 16:8 fasting thingy and like Tetris, cutting down on takeaways.

Starting tomorrow (too much cheese to use up and I refuse to waste food). Furious that no added sugar Heinz beans are not vegan, but not sure I can be arsed with the whole honey thing anyway- I hate honey, so I'm never going to ACTIVELY have it.

Anyway, loves, I'm READY:

I can only eat kale raw. It makes me gag when cooked.

I’m having a lentil cottage pie with a layer of green kale pesto tomorrow.

The normal ones are fine. The NAS have honey in them- which kinda defeats the point..,
Why can't they use agave? That seems to be the popular vegan alternative, I believe.

It's all so bloody short sighted!

Well, exactly! It’s that minefield which winds me right up. It shouldn’t be a thing in 2020.

I’ve been vegetarian for over 20 years, a lot of the time vegan as a coincidence. Those Wicked range fresh meals are so handy for something quick and healthy which tastes good and fills you. Hellman’s have launched three new vegan mayos this month for Veganuary, garlic, chipotle and baconnaise. I hope to find some on my weekly shop tomorrow.

Top 3 WICKED meals:

1. Nana's SPAG BOL thing
2. Chinese STIR FRY thing
3. Dirty fries/potato wedges thing

But I also like that naked burrito thing they do.

Yeah it's a good range.

I've never seen those Tofurkey chorizo crumbles (sounds amazing) but I buy that from that line all the time, especially the deli slices and sausages

The chorizo is the best by a mile. I’ve been eating it for the past couple of years

I'm doing Veganuary too. Egg is wonderful and delicious but I don't think I'll have any problems cutting out anything else bar those. I've never tasted meat before so I've no idea if their any good as an alternative but my other half swears by https://www.thevegetarianbutcher.com/products and used to be a big WICKED fan until he discovered that brand.

I liked the chicken but it kinda freaked me out having it even though its obviously NOT meat. I guess because I've never eaten meat I don't feel the need to have these substitutes. Arent they so expensive too?

I don’t find them any more expensive than real meat, but yeah, I guess I “miss” meat in some places and feel this is a good alternative. However, when I went veggie, I was determined not to just replace meat with processed alternatives and so they’re a few meals a week rather than everything.

I feel thats the best way. A lot of people I know decide to go veggie and just BULK BUY THE QUORN IN. I'm sorry but quorn mince and bacon (especially the bacon OMG) is one of the worst things I've ever had in my mouth! Eating that shit won't keep people veggie.

Have any of you found a good alternative to milk to use in tea? Pretty much everything I've bought makes it look like SICK in a cup and I'm currently trying to make myself just like black tea instead :D

Quorn mince is ok- there’s better things out there, absolutely, but it’s super low fat and if you know what you’re doing with it, it’s good. I make an awesome Quorn bolognaise- you just need to let it sit to absorb the flavours properly.

I don’t drink tea or coffee so no idea, I’m afraid. I also have hated milk forever, so although I eat dairy products, I’ve had plant milks and yoghurts for years now. I HATE the thought of cow juice, frankly. Love it whenever we go for coffee somewhere and I ask if they can make me a milkshake with their plant milk substitute:

“Well no, sorry, we can’t make the mint choc chip cause the ice cream isn’t vegan”

“Oh that’s fine, just with the nut milk, please”

“But the ice cream has milk in it, it’s not vegan”

“Oh yes, that’s fine...”

*confused look and sometimes muttering*

:D
