A festive address from Dame Annie Lennox, OBE (for charity work )
What are the ingredients for a perfect Christmas?
For the orphans of South Sudan and elsewhere on our blighted Earth, this is a silly question. Like most days, they are too busy thinking about famine. Lullay, lullay, my tiny younglings.
In this collection of festive images - a
Christmas Cornucopia, so to speak - we observe the ingredients most common in the exploitative First World.
Green lentils and mung beans. These represent the lifeforce of the feminine. Our raw materials, to be processed and consumed by the male.
Hessian sacks and flavoursome Waitrose nut roast. These represent our Western indulgences. My children will be spending Christmas Day in these comfortable and well-ventilated sacks. Do not mistake my expression for one of delight - I have accidentally overcooked my kale.
Dental dams and JLS condoms (I understand their style of urban music to be popular in Africa). These represent the sense of caution and perspicacity possessed by those among us who have glimpsed the worst of our planet, be it HIV outbreaks, melting glaciers, or menopause.
I hope you understand me,
Mugatu
