I don't especially resent any of the current favourites as they're either overdue a win (Switzerland, France, Iceland), I like them (Sweden, Italy) or both (Cyprus, Malta).

The only one in top 10 I resent is Norway.

Anyway I asked you all who was going to win this year and even THIS thread has turned into a HEATED DEBATE!

I honestly can not cope with Moopy at the minute! :D
Of course it did. We all have different thoughts and are going to discuss them.

Much as I would like to think that everyone would correctly choose San Marino and be done with it, there are always wrong'uns who think their mavericks by picking Iceland or the Netherlands and like to show off about it.

NO FUCKING IDEA! I’m tempted to vote Cyprus but will that have as much appeal outside of our screaming gay circles? The Switzerland votes are because of the odds?

Well, unless 'working in their favour' means 'making Buttertart happy' I'm really not sure by what metric things aren't working out for them? :D

They're consistent top ten players, they've won twice in the past decade and their national selection is a fucking juggernaut!
The metric where the public bothers about them. Yeah, they do very well with the juries but the public response has been underwhelming at best, catastrophic at worst. In 2018 they were less popular than SURIE.

I don’t hate Sweden, they’re the only country whose national final I actually attend, but they’ve not had a ‘moment’ in years - even Mans was a consensus winner.

For what it’s worth, I think @VoR is being wilfully blind to the fact that Sweden has been blandness city at Eurovision for quite a while now, and @ButterTart to the fact that it has clearly been working for them.

I have no idea why, I think they’re fairly uncontroversial points to concede...

But as I pointed out last night, that's simply not true. Benjamin is the only time they haven't been top 10 in the televote since 2013. I don't think any other country can match that consistency off the top of my head.

I DO happily concede that they've been veering towards blander male soloists, and I'd like to see that change. But their ultimate approach is still going to be to send slickly produced modern(ish) pop music, because that is Sweden's music scene in a nutshell!

To veer back on topic a bit, I will eat my hat if Voices is not top ten in the televote this year.

For how 'open' this year supposedly is, I think there's a lot of throwing random countries around just for fun and to make it seem open, and when it comes down to it, it'll be quite a comfy win for Switzerland. But that's just based off the odds and it being in the lead on the Scoreboard app, it wouldn't be a winner to my tastes.

Even if San Marino don't technically win Eurovision, I feel like they've already won Eurovision. They have brought the moment.

Poor lynched @Soldi! :D / :(
I'm sure it's a combination of the bottleneck of entry reveals and lockdown fatigue/boredom but this place DOES feel like it's been on a permanent 11 recently. There's been multiple times where I haven't bothered to post because I frankly cba having an unnecessary online argument about a EUROVISION SONG! Heaven forbid somebody mentions Telemóveis on here EVER AGAIN!
Anyway just showing some SUPPORT and SOLIDARITY to my fave Italian fanboy.

In regards to who is going to win, I just DON'T SEE IT for Switzerland. It kind of reminds me of several times when a Serbian BBB was the favourite to win in the 00s only for something with far more spectacular staging to snatch it in the end...although they did manage it with Molitva!

I do think it's going to be a year where the winner will become QUITE CLEAR once rehearsals start. I still see Cyprus as being potentially EXTREMELY competitive if they get it right - but if they get it WRONG it's totally out of the running.
I think Lithuania are still being underrated. The performance is charming, polished and extremely memorable and I don't see it as JURY POISON either.
Iceland have built up quite the following over the past year which can't be ignored either. Regardless of whether we are sold on this year's song or not they have a definite in-built advantage on the televote.

I'd love Malta too, and I'm sure they are going to bring it - but is it too close to Toy/not enough of a CHORUS? I'm going to RESERVE JUDGEMENT until later in the SEASON :D

Don't forget to catch up on The Masked Mooper thread to see Moopy at its best IMO

Incidentally I’m quite surprised at the determination to shut down discussion I’ve seen in this and other threads. I can’t speak for VoR but this was nothing more than a good natured exchange of views, absolutely nothing close to an argument. I’ve got opinions, so has everyone else, at no point has this veered into territory I’d say was even slightly confrontational.

Apart from this post. This is slightly confrontational.

Oh and I just CANNOT with this talk of San Marino being anywhere NEAR the win :D

Surely it's a SHOE IN for most over-thought, overblown hot MESS of the year (if Moldova don't get there first). Or is Senhit known as some sort of effortlessly CAPTIVATING PERFORMER? :D

It's not been this thread for me (and it's not JUST you), but I'll admit to finding some of the stuff in other threads - particularly the ESC semi watch threads - quite repetitive. I'm sure it was never your intention and I'm not saying you shouldn't post whatever you want, but seeing multiple negative posts from the same people, about the same stuff, in short order can be a bit WEARING. I'm well aware this same criticism can be easily levelled at MYSELF by the way, don't worry :tongueout: Also aware this is probably more of a ME PROBLEM, and again I'm not telling anybody not to post.

I'm aware I go in feet first about things a lot of the time, especially if I have a bee in my bonnet about something. Nothing's ever meant to come off as aggressive so I apologise if it does, and I admit my tone is very much affected by how I'm feeling at the time so I'll try to just turn the other cheek rather than wading in to let everyone know I think something is shit.

When I talk about shutting down discussion it's not just this thread, or discussions involving me, I just feel like sometimes things are called arguments when they're absolutely not. It's hard to judge tone when reading what someone has written so I know it's easy to take remarks in a way they weren't intended but, I dunno, it just feels like debate can be discouraged sometimes.

Yeah I'd hate for anybody to feel excluded from sharing their views here. We're all LOON FANS so we can get a bit intense, but I like to think we've managed to keep the tenor of the conversations friendly. At no point have I felt any ill will towards Buttertart or anybody else - we're just having a lively debate.

Obviously if people are finding it a bit full-on I'd be 100% happy to look at specific instances, but I would say if you want truly toxic Eurovision forum debate, take a look at the God-forsaken escforum.net (or better yet, don't!) Truly some of the most miserable, hate-filled people on the internet. :D

I like having these sorts of conversations, to be honest. Becoming your own echo chamber is a trap I definitely fall into, so a bit of lively chat helps to snap me out of it.

I don't find the Euro Semis topics especially toxic, certainly no more than any other, but WORN OUT OPINIONS can grate.

Also, as soon as I go into a Eurovision topic, I know I'm in an arena. With that understanding, none of the craziness especially affects me.

I think you're perhaps reading a little too much into what I meant.
I've been a (mainly Eurovision-focused) poster for many years now, and I'm VERY used to this place being on a permanent 8 or 9 (whcih I something I absolutely feed into myself), it just feels recently every time I log in most threads are at BOILING POINT and for me personally it's getting a bit exhausting.
I absolutely did not mean any kind of shutting down debate at all - you even mention tone above, with perhaps debate for one person reads as an argument for another.
As I also said, i think this is a product of it being national final season and almost all of us cooped up at home with Eurovision as our big escapist moment - I'm sure things will naturally and organically simmer down a little over the next few weeks.

I also wasn't intentionally targeting you in my above post (and to underline here - you are a poster I respect and thoroughly enjoy).
My aim was to speak up and support Soldi who was making a point I agreed with. I'm not really sure what the solution is, or whether we necessarily even NEED one at all, but it's always fun to VENT :eyes:

To be fair, that's true of everyone.
